Describe the relationship between stress and social hierarchy/rank found in Sapolsky’s baboon study. Use at least two examples from the documentary. (2 points)  The lower ranked baboons who have higher heart rates and blood pressure relate to their levels of stress.  The baboons that are higher up in their rank in their hierarchy experience a lot less stress than the ones that are lower in their rank in their hierarchy. 2. List at least two examples of findings from Marmont’s “Whitehall Study” in the United Kingdom’s British Civil Service as discussed in the documentary. (2 points)  The lower a person is ranked the more likely they will have a heart disease and the higher a person is ranked the less likely they will have a heart disease.  The stress had the same exact relationship as the baboons, which was the higher they are ranked, the less stress they experience, and everyone had access to health care 3. As discussed in the “ Stress, Portrait of a Killer ” documentary, when stressed what happens to the body’s immune system? (2 points)  When stressed, the body’s immune system cannot work as good as if the person was not stressed? 4. Describe two results that came about in Shively’s macaque monkeys study between dominant and subordinate monkeys with HEART HEALTH? (2 points)  Stress in the monkeys damages the arteries in the heart which is not good at all for heart health.  Subordinate monkeys have a lot of buildup and clogged arteries while on the other hand the monkeys who did not have stress had nice clean arteries. 5. Sapolsky & McEwen’s study on stress and the brain has shown what detrimental effects on brain health? (2 points)  The rats branches in their brain became smaller when they were stressed and it happened more in the hippocampus which effects how they were taught things and hwo they remembered things 6. Describe what results came about in Shively’s macaque monkeys study between dominant and subordinate monkeys and the BRAIN? (2 points)  The monkeys who were dominant had a bunch of dopamine being released, while on the other hand the monkeys who were not as dominant did not have too much dopamine being released.

7. The Whitehall study and Shively revealed a relationship between stress and body weight/composition. In two sentences, describe what you learned in the documentary. (2 points)  Monkeys that were not as overweight, tended to have a higher rank and were not as stressed.  The monkeys that were a little bit overweight tended to have a lower rank and were stressed out. 8. Rosebloom’s study about the Dutch Hunger Winter demonstrated what conclusions about stress, pregnant mothers and their children? List 4 examples. (2 points)  Stress affects the mental state and health.  Babies that were born have a higher chance of getting heart diseases and this could also lead to poor health.  Babies will experience stress sometimes up to 60 years later.  The mother’s blood has stress hormones that trigger a change in the nervous system of the baby 9. Sapolsky’s research also looked at genetic structures and stress. Describe what telomeres are and what comprises stress places on the human body through telomeres? (2 points)  A telomere is the structure at the end or tip of the chromosome that protects it.  Stress causes these telomeres to shrink. 10. Blackburn’s and Eppel’s study examined chronically stressed parents caring for their children who have special needs. Discuss the effects of stress on these parents. (2 points)  The telomeres of the mothers are shortened because the stress of being a parent on them.  Both parents have stress when caring for their children who have special needs
