1. Describe which social psychology concept you are choosing (e.g., conformity, obedience, altruism, persuasion, etc…) and indicate how you see it manifested in the film/book you chose. - The social psychology concept I chose was persuasion. I see it manifested in the film “12 Angry Men,” throughout the trial based on the information and delivery of evidence presented by the Prosecution and Defense. Although, there are other concepts such as conformity, also portrayed in the film. I see persuasion portrayed throughout the movie most predominantly between the jurors. There is intense debating and various persuasive tactics used, such as appealing to emotions, logical reasoning, and presentation of evidence. All of these are used to compel reasoning between them with the goal of reaching a unanimous verdict. The film also portrays various persuasion techniques in a group setting through effective communication skills. 2. Describe the social psychology concept. What does it mean? How has it been studied in the field of social psychology? What have you learned about it this semester? -Persuasion serves an important function in a social society. It is the influence people have on one another by changing someone's beliefs, decisions, or actions through various techniques such as emotional reasoning or through types of communication. There are three theories of persuasion: social judgment theory, cognitive dissonance theory, and the elaboration likelihood model. Muzafer Sherif and Carl Hovland created social judgment theory in an attempt to determine what types of communicative messages and under what conditions communicated messages will lead to a change in someone’s behavior (Sherif & Hovland, 1961). They found that people’s perceptions of values, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs exist on a continuum. The continuum includes latitude of noncommitment, latitude of rejection , and latitude of acceptance. In a perfect world, we would constantly be able to convince others of our viewpoints, but that is not how things actually work. Rather, we frequently find ourselves in circumstances where we are attempting to influence people to adopt attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors that they might not find agreeable. We must consider the variety of potential attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors in order to assist us in persuading others.
In 1957, Leon Festinger proposed another theory for understanding how persuasion functions: cognitive dissonance theory (Festinger, 1957). When a person simultaneously entertains two or more contradictory attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors, it can lead to cognitive dissonance, an unpleasant motivational state. For instance, you might really want to see a movie with a friend, but you know you should be practicing for your speech. In this instance, going to the movie and rehearsing your speech are two contradictory cognitions. Getting listeners to experience enough dissonance to alter their attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors is the aim of persuasion. The third is the elaboration likelihood model. 3. Briefly describe the film/book you chose (e.g., its plot, characters, themes, etc…). This description does not need to be really lengthy (you don't need to summarize the entire plot; hit the high points), but it should be sufficient to demonstrate that you actually viewed the entire film or read the entire book. - The film tells the story of a jury of 12 men as they deliberate the conviction or acquittal of a teenager charged with murder on the basis of reasonable doubt. 4. Clearly describe how you feel the film/book you chose relates to the social psychology concept. If you chose altruism, for example, how do the characters in the film/book behave prosocially toward others? If you chose group, think, how did the characters get caught in a situation that resulted in a groupthink mentality? 5. Finally, take time to ensure that your finished product is polished (no grammatical/spelling errors in written work, no grammatical issues or unclear language in video submissions), flows well, and looks professional. While you aren't expected to submit Spielberg-quality films, your submission should be at least as professional-appearing as reasonable videos seen on YouTube or PowerPoint presentations made in a work setting.
