The Bystander Effect 1) Locate a recent (within the past 10 years) example of the Bystander Effect phenomenon in current events . I found an incident that took place February 7 2)Briefly describe the Bystander Effect. The bystander effect is where there are multiple witnesses to an incident, and no one helps. Everyone assumes someone else will help in the situation, or have better knowledge on what to do, so they do not get their hands dirty or get involved. 3) Create a 300-word summary of the events (in your own words) and explain how the event demonstrates the Bystander Effect. The incident I found is upsetting . The site contains both the 911 call and video footage of the incident. This man had been drinking with some friends while standing outside of a 7-eleven store, on a busy corner street in the city of Chicago. The video showed a bigger man walk to the victim and exchange some words, talking with his hands and getting really close to his face... someone tried to get in between the two but the offenders body language was not having it and continued to talk with his hands and step towards the victim. After the victim realized he was not stopping he seemed to defend himself and say a few things back. The few men standing with him have backed away at this point. The bigger man swung just one time, and knocked the victim out cold, with him landing in the road, beside the curb. It looked as if a few people were coming to help him, but when they realized he was not moving, they began to steal items off him. Many people walked up to him, acknowledging that he was laying there in the road; they just looked at him.
No one bothered to move him or block traffic off. Shortly after the incident, even with people standing on the curb, a cab driver cut the curb as he normally would and ran right over the unconscious body. The store clerk did not explain what had happened well to the dispatch when he was talking to them and would not correctly answer the questions needed. He did not really express urgency, and I'm sure that prolonged help coming. This man could have been alive to this day if someone would have helped him. It sounds as if he had alcohol in his system, and with taking a hit like that knocked him out pretty good. He couldn't help himself up, all it would have taken was for someone to help move him on the curb, instead of stealing from him... or stand and block traffic until the ambulance arrived. The man who called 911 could have checked the site out up close and personal and explained the situation much better for the authorities.
