Academic and Social Emotional Behavior Reflection EDU352 Carrie Palmeter Students with Intellectual Disabilities and Emotional Behavior Disorders both intrigue me. Whether or not they are born with the disability of have established it through life traumas or stress-endured situations, these students are strong willed and need to be handled more delicately. There are no two children alike. Regardless of their disability or disorder, there is no cut and dry way to redirect or correct a problem as students may endure. There are many similarities that students with academic and social emotional behaviors share. Both types of students can be disruptive in class. They may have a hard time focusing on their schoolwork. Or engage in an activity. It may be hard for students to take on a task with multiple steps. They may need additional guidance, or a smaller amount of workload given to them at one time. A characteristic I have seen the most in children with academic and/or social emotional behaviors are complaints about a stomachache. Or a headache. At PE, they may have an ailment of some sort. They have zero interest in the activity and would prefer to sit out instead of participating. If I had to recreate the Venn diagram presented in the module, I would add exhibits anxiety to both categories. I feel as if students with academic disabilities can also display anxiety. Anxiety can be measured in multiple ways. Nail biting is an anxiety sign that I personally experience.
Students with diagnosed academic disabilities receive accommodation to help alleviate some of their stresses. More time on assignments or tests. Questions and answers read aloud twice. Annual IEP/504 plans are established and printed out to all teachers including special area teachers. In my Coach binder, I have accommodations printed out and put into dividers. This is my teacher bible. In case I am not present one day, a substitute can easily access the student’s accommodation. Social behaviors are the hardest to pinpoint. While I worked in the EBD classroom as a Paraprofessional, I witnessed an array of different behaviors each day. To witness students so young and with burdens to bear , it can prohibit a student’s ability to learn. Emotional behavior students may not get enough sleep at night. Due to family situations, they may share a room with siblings or other family members. Family trauma can cause emotional disruptions . To know a student’s triggers is a useful tool for teachers. This can prevent meltdown or at least redirect the student. Academic and social emotional behaviors have appeared to be more prominent in the fast-paced world with instant gratifications. Students, parents, teachers and staff must work together to create a safe environment. When a student feels safe and loved, they are more likely to shine in the classroom.
