Behavioral Capability : Behavioral Capability refers to whether someone has knowledge and skills required to perform a certain behavior successfully. For the example given, Teresa needs to know the consequences of her actions and learn the skills to make smarter choices. An activity I would use is having organized educational meetings based on the consequences of risky sexual behavior and alcohol abuse. You can invite a guest speaker to talk about their stories and the consequences they have faced. While doing this, at some point you should include resources that provide extra information and knowledge about sexual health and substance abuse. By involving the guest speaker and providing additional resources, Teresa can now make smart, more informed choices. Self Efficacy : one’s perception or belief in themselves to accomplish or make a change, or belief that they could do something. An activity I would use to impact the construct would be informing Teresa that she does not need to have anyone’s approval, and she should stick to what she wants to do or feels comfortable doing. I chose the activity for the construct because practicing good self efficacy is the first and most important step when someone is making a change in themselves or in starting to do something Theresa does not practice good self efficacy because she is only looking for approval from her peers by doing bad things to herself, but she should believe that she herself is a good person and should just be herself. How would you create an intervention based on SCT aimed at reducing her drug abuse (alcohol) and risky sex. Please use self-efficacy, behavioral capability and vicarious learning in your intervention components/activities. Creating an intervention would first have to be encouraging and promoting so that she would choose in her own mind that she shouldn’t be having risky sex or abusing alcohol just because she wants to make friends and gain popularity, and that there are other ways she can make friends. She would have to use self efficacy to make the changes back into what she wants to be and not someone she thinks she needs to be. Next, you will need to give her the proper tools she would need mentally to make the changes she needs. One of the most important tools she needs is having high self efficacy which was the first step, and now she needs to have the knowledge of what all of the risky sex and drinking will do to her body in the long run. We would also need to stop outside influences in her life and make her more strong minded so she doesn’t worry about what other people think, and she should interact with people in a more positive way than negative attention. Teresa would also have to understand and use her behavioral capability. This involves understanding substance abuse, and knowing what is good for her. You can conduct interviews with her to assess and survey her understanding of possible consequences.
