Psy 101 Page 1 of 3 Disseminating Psychological Research Worksheet Key Concepts What is the concept you would like to communicate? What are the key components that need to be shared? Our own behavior as an individual can be influenced by the actions of others, we surround ourselves with which then impacts how we make decisions. This leads me to want to communicate the role of social comparison. This is when we observe our own skills and determine the status of them by comparing them to others’. The key concepts that need to be shared are that your beliefs, opinions, and behaviors, are not validated by comparing to how someone else does something. I believe it is also important to share that we only tend to do this when there is not a definite answer, so we feel the need to rely on someone else’s opinion. Audience Who are you planning on disseminating this concept to? What characteristics and social systems are necessary to understand the context of this group? I plan on disseminating this concept to younger teenagers. This is the age where most kids start to determine things based off others. This could be a friend, classmate, teammate, family member, or even a character in a television show. I believe in order to understand this group I would want to observe their social interactions and norms. There are many characteristics this age group struggles with. This includes poor self-esteem, struggling with identity, feeling awkward as they change, and beginning to observe and follow others. These are things I would want to understand in order to know how to communicate the key components properly. Rationale Why is your social personality concept important to your chosen audience? Connect the key components of the concept with the unique characteristics and social dynamics of your audience. My social personality concept is important to my chosen audience because of the context of this group. The beginning of teenager years is where a lot of kids begin to compare themselves to others. They compare their physical appearance, behavior, style, actions, opinions, and so much more to others. I believe it is important to teach them that their individuality and how valued they are is not validated through anyone else but themselves. It should also be helpful to tell them that we primarily do this because we feel unsure, so we look to find the answer in someone else. A large section of this age group is going through an identity crisis, so they fall into this category more than others.
Psy 101 Page 2 of 3 Dissemination Design What is an appropriate dissemination design to share your concept? What platform will use? What strategies will you employ? What change are you trying to affect? An appropriate dissemination design to share my concept would be creating a presentation. I would use teenagers to act out a situation where someone is comparing themselves to another kid. Then after showing an example that they can relate to I would explain why we all feel the need to compare so they know they are not alone. The rest of the piece would go on to explain ways they can avoid doing this action. This includes encouraging yourself, acknowledging your strengths and successes, accepting your feelings, treating yourself with kindness, and prioritizing your own needs. It would be important to emphasize that their own beliefs, opinions, and characteristics are not validated through someone else. I chose a video as my dissemination design because it can be used on multiple platforms. It can be posted through social media like YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, shared to parents to show their kids, and even put out for schools to show at an assembly. My strategy will be spreading the results through social media because it is something most teens have access to. My goal is this give teens strategies to avoid comparing themselves to others and feel less alone. If we can teach them this at a young age, I believe it will have a positive impact on the mental health of future generations. Audience Considerations What, if any, considerations should be made to ensure psychological research is effectively communicated to your audience? Since this presentation is made for teenagers, there are certain factors to make sure the research is effectively communicated. It is important to make the presentation engaging, colorful, and can even be interactive. In order for them to pick up the key concepts, they need to stay engaged and relate it back to themselves. I would make the slides simple, so they do not get lost or confused, but also still catching their attention. I would do this by adding pictures, videos, asking questions, and keeping explanations short and to the point.
