Jeenera Hossain PUBH 613: Assignment 9 Content analysis Part 1. Read the following article: Owen PR. Portrayals of schizophrenia by entertainment media: a content analysis of contemporary movies. Psychiatr Serv. 2012;63(7):655-659 (Available on Blackboard) Answer the following questions (each worth 0.15 points, for a total of 0.75 points) : 1. What is the research question, and the motivation behind the research question (why did the author want to answer it)? The research question is “How prevalent are misinformation and stereotypes about schizophrenia in contemporary movies?” The motivation behind this question was the common notion that mental illness is inaccurately depicted in media and that can lead to a misunderstanding of said conditions by the audiences who consume it. There have been no studies until this one that sought to see if these beliefs were accurate by analyzing movie content. 2. How was the sample defined? Which databases were used for the search? Which search terms were used? Only English-language movies that were released in theaters between the years 1990 and 2010 and included at least one schizophrenic character were included in this study. The databases that were used for the search included but were not limited to, Turner Classic Movies, Netflix, Internet Movie Database, VideoHound Movie Guide, Time Out Film Guide, and Yahoo! Movies. Essentially, databases that allowed one to search using key terms and topics were used. The search terms that were used were “mental illness,” “mental problem,” “psychiatric illness,” “psychiatric problem,” “schizophrenia,” “psychological illness,” “psychological problem,” “insanity,” “hallucinations,” “crazy,” “psychosis,” “delusions,” and “delusional.” 3. List the variables the researcher used to code the data. The variables the researcher used to code the data were demographic characteristics, symptoms and stereotypes, causation, and treatment. 4. What is the author’s main conclusion based on the study results?
Based on the study results, there was evidence of contemporary movies showing both accuracies and inaccuracies in depictions of schizophrenia. The author believes that it is important that the portrayals of mental illness should be more truthful so as to decrease stigma towards them. 5. In your opinion, how trustworthy are the results of this study? Which aspects of the design contribute to its trustworthiness (credibility, dependability, confirmability, and/or transferability)? What are some of the study’s limitations? In my opinion, the results are fairly trustworthy. I believe the dependability of this study contributes most to its trustworthiness. There were two researchers who independently coded for the aforementioned variables. A graduate student was also included for the reason of interrater reliability. A limitation of the study is that it only included movies within a certain range and only those that were released in theaters. Another limitation is that there were no previous studies of this kind that the findings or methods could be compared to.
