Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) 1 Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) Navigating Work-Life Balance: Social & Cultural Response MACP Program, Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, Yorkville University PSYC 6104 – A Biopsychosocial Approach to Counselling Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) Navigating Work-Life Balance: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response
Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) 2 Navigating work-life balance has become increasingly important in modern society, as people strive to find a healthy equilibrium between their personal and professional lives. However, the concept of work-life balance is not just an individual concern; it is also shaped by social and cultural factors (Slay-Westbrook, S., 2017). This assignment will critically evaluate how understanding social and cultural responses is essential for navigating work-life balance in a meaningful and effective way. Hi, it is good to be back. Last time we talked about how I have been feeling overwhelmed and stressed lately with work and personal life demands. You asked about my social and cultural experiences so that I would share more today. As I mentioned before, I grew up, and discipline and schedule were essential to my parents. They both had high-powered jobs, and they expected a lot from me. I loved my parents, but I felt like I was always under pressure to do more and be better. When I left home for university, it was a significant relief for me. I could finally make my own decisions and live on my own terms. When I met my husband, he showed me that life could be more relaxing and enjoyable. He is a caring person, but I struggle with his spontaneity. It makes me feel like I can't rely on him. It is hard because I crave structure and predictability. Also, rural life on the farm has been a real struggle for me as a city girl. I was used to the fast pace of life, the convenience of having everything I needed nearby, and a certain level of predictability. At the farm, I am responsible for tasks that I had never even heard of before, and there seemed to be an endless list of things that needed to be done every day. I found adjusting to the slower pace of life hard and often felt in over my head. Despite my best efforts to adapt to rural living, I sometimes feel like I don't belong here. I miss the convenience of the city and the comfort of knowing what to expect each day. It's been a real challenge for me, but I'm determined to find a way to make it work. And there is no relief at work. I am being asked to do more and more. Management keeps pushing me with more duties and working hours, and I can never catch up. It's hard because I care a lot about my patients, but I also need to care for myself. My upbringing and cultural background have much to do with my current struggles. In my culture, there's a big emphasis on hard work and discipline. It's crucial to be successful and to make your parents proud. But there's a lot of pressure to do everything perfectly. It's hard because I know I'm doing my best, but it never feels enough.
Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) 3 Discussion of Social Factors Related to my Topic At the beginning of the second session, my counsellor refreshed the information about informed consent. She explained that informed consent is a critical aspect of the therapeutic process because it helps me understand what therapy involves, the potential risks and benefits, and my rights and responsibilities as a client. My counsellor also reminded me that I have the right to ask questions and that she would be transparent about their approach and techniques. This discussion about informed consent helped me feel more comfortable and confident in the therapeutic process. The counsellor actively listened to my concerns and showed empathy and understanding to build the therapeutic session. She was respectful of my experiences and provided a safe space to discuss my feelings. She also asked open-ended questions, which allowed me to express myself more freely (Shebib, 2017). Also, she asked about my upbringing and cultural background, which helped me understand how these factors could influence my current experiences. The counsellor identified at least three social factors that could be impacting me. One social factor that my counsellor has identified is my rural living situation on a farm, which has been a significant adjustment for me as a city girl ( Bhui, K., Dinos, S., 2016). Another social factor is my husband's spontaneity and lack of structure, which conflicts with my need for structure and predictability and highlights the importance of interpersonal relationships in my stress levels ( Meyer, A., Wissemann, K., 2020). A third social factor is the increasing demands and responsibilities at work ( Zhu, Y., Quansah, P. E., 2020). Also, she pointed out that I might be experiencing nurses’ Burnout due to societal pressure on nurses to provide high-quality care while often undervaluing their critical contributions to healthcare systems. ( Mudallal, R. H., Othman, W. M., 2017). During our sessions, I appreciated how my counsellor showed empathy toward me. She actively listened to what I was saying and not just waiting for her speech. She would often reflect on what I said and validate my feelings, making me feel heard and understood (Shebib, 2017, p.96). She was patient, non-judgmental, and respectful, which made me feel like I could be honest and vulnerable with her (Slay-Westbrook, S., 2017, p.3/16). She would lean in when I spoke and maintain eye contact, which made me feel like I had her full attention (Shebib, 2017, p.101-120). All of the above helped me to build trust and feel more confident in myself and my ability to cope with my challenges.

Assignment 2: Micro-Assignment Social & Cultural Response, Socially Just (CRSJ) 4 Discussion of Culturally/Just Factors Related to my Topic From what I shared with the counsellor, I remember her acknowledging the cultural and family background that shaped my values and expectations. She identified how the pressure to succeed and the need for structure was likely a result of my upbringing and cultural background. I appreciated that she recognized that my struggles were not just personal but had cultural roots. The counsellor tried to listen carefully and validate my experiences to create a respectful therapeutic session. She showed empathy and did not judge or dismiss my feelings, even though she might have seemed irrational or trivial to others ( Shebib, 2020). The counsellor also allowed me to set the pace of the session and did not rush me to disclose anything I was uncomfortable with. She encouraged me to be honest and open but also respected my boundaries and privacy (Slay-Westbrook, S., 2017). There were three cultural/just factors that the counsellor and I discussed. At first, we talk about the pressure to succeed. As a person from my cultural background, there's a big emphasis on achievement and success ( Piotrowski K., 2020) . My parents, who had high-powered jobs, instilled this in me from a young age. I was always expected to excel in school and be the best I could be (Suh, H., Liou, P. Y., 2022). This pressure has carried over into my adult life and made balancing work and personal life challenging ( Rippon, D., McDonnell, 2020). Through the discussion, I realize that I need some structure in my life due to my upbringing. I find comfort in routines and predictability. I like to know what to expect and feel more in control when I have a set schedule. However, we discussed that this might clash with my husband's spontaneity and the demands of rural living, which require flexibility and adaptability. Also, she helped me to see the existing stigma around seeking help (Stangl, A.L., Earnshaw, V.A., Logie, C.H., 2019) . In my culture, a stigma is often attached to mental health issues and seeking therapy. I've been raised to believe that I should be able to handle my problems on my own and that seeking help is a sign of weakness. This belief has made it hard for me to reach out for support, even when needed. However, I was happy to hear that my husband could help me navigate it ( Hostinar, C. E., Gunnar, M. R., 2015). Despite struggling with his spontaneity, he is caring and supportive. Through the discussion with the counsellor, I realized that he has shown me that life can be more enjoyable and was helping me to adapt to rural

Having a supportive partner can be a protective factor for me that can buffer the negative impact of stress ( Canevello, A., & Crocker, J., 2010) . Also, she pointed out that my determination to make rural living work for me shows a willingness to adapt and overcome challenges. This determination can be a protective factor that will help me to build resilience and cope with stress. My counsellor has used a culturally sensitive approach in therapy to ensure that cultural and just aspects are considered. She has shown respect for my cultural background and avoided making assumptions or stereotypes ( Slay-Westbrook, S., 2017). She has also provided education on different cultural perspectives. She has helped me understand how my culture may impact my thoughts and feelings. References : Bhui, K., Dinos, S., Galant-Miecznikowska, M., de Jongh, B., & Stansfeld, S. (2016).
