ATI Self-Concept Scenario Scenario The 17-year-old-female is a junior in high school. The student attends a small school where class sizes are 12-18 students. Because of the small number of students, the school strongly encourages students to be involved in multiple extracurricular activities. This 17-year-old is involved in basketball, softball, volleyball, and track. In addition, the student participates in band, speech, and theater. These school activities are in addition to the student’s part-time job and assisting in caring for her younger siblings. Respond to the following questions and provide an evidenced-based rationale. 1. Which developmental task is the 17-year-old addressing according to Erickson’s stages of psychosocial development? Identity vs role confusion a. What is the goal for the 17-year-old according to the developmental task? Identify a skill/talent, who they are, develop relationships with peers and family/friends. b. Is the 17-year-old meeting the development task? Why or why not? Not yet. Still deciding since she is still busy with excess of tasks. 2. Identify the actual and potential stressors that could affect the 17-year-old’s self- concept. Multitude of activities, self-esteem, relationships suffer, identity stressor a. How will a positive self-esteem potentially impact the 17-year-old’s response to the identified stressors? Able to handle multi-tasking and being able to work through it. 3. If the nurse were assessing the 17-year-old, which subjective and objective findings, if present, would suggest concerns related to self-concept? Signs of fatigue, weight management, Scenario Progression The 17-year-old is involved in a car accident and requires surgery, which leaves a large abdominal scar and requires the use of crutches for 6 weeks after surgery to stabilize her ankle. How might these events impact the female’s self-concept? Cant participate in her normal activities, possible body image issues, self-esteem, identity and role (who she is now without the activities) 4. Respond to the following items: a. How does an individual’s self-concept relate to their overall health and wellness?
