According to the biopsychosocial approach, pain and disability are the results of a complex integration that involves several dimensions and a dynamic interplay between physical and personal elements. Additionally, the degree of pain that is felt can also be influenced by social circumstances. For instance, the way in which one copes with pain is influenced by one's culture as well as the nation in which one resides, which in turn influences one's perception of pain. Even though research on pain has typically concentrated on the sensory modalities and the neuronal transmissions recognized primarily on a biological level, more modern ideas (integrating the body, mind, and society) have been created in recent years. Pain is understood as a dynamic interplay among and within the social, psychological, and biological factors that are specific to everyone in the biopsychosocial model, which is the perspective that is the most heuristic. The initial injury that generated the pain also disrupts the homeostatic systems of the body, which, in turn, produces stress and the activation of complicated processes to restore equilibrium. Therefore, pain is not merely a perceptual phenomenon; rather, it is the result of a chain reaction that begins with the initial injury. It has been determined that the biopsychosocial approach to understanding pain is the model that has been the most successful to this point. This is because the biopsychosocial approach encompasses the larger concerns that are entrenched in the interactions that occur between the social, psychological, and biological factors that are specific to everyone. To put it another way, the concept of feeling pain cannot be dissected into its component parts, whether they be physical or psychological. A condition that causes chronic pain cannot be treated; instead, it must be managed. This is like the situation with other chronic medical conditions, for example diabetes or asthma. Not only is a wider diversity of treatment choices required due to the variability with regards to the biological and psychosocial factors that are present in a population with chronic pain, but it is also crucial to correctly match the course of treatment to the patient to provide the best possible outcome. Because two individuals who have the same disease are likely to have different physical, social, and psychological makeups, "lumping" these people into an identical treatment program will not likely give the greatest results in comparison to a therapy regimen that is personalized to the patient's specific needs.
