UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION 2 Introduction Addiction results from a combination of causes. Most people have a higher propensity to succumb to substance misuse if they have certain hereditary traits. Trying to run away from a traumatic or stressful situation is another explanation. In addition to social cues like hanging out at the bar with pals, readily available drugs at low cost also play a role in the development of addicted behavior. However, a person is more likely to inherit an addiction if they have a parent or close relative in their family history who has a history of substance abuse or compulsive behaviors such as gambling or betting. THE ADDICTION PROCESS Rob has experienced a challenging upbringing. His mother exhibited substance dependency issues, while their father had a history of intermittent incarceration. The nature of his interactions with his parents typically manifested in a predominantly unfavorable manner. After spending years addicted to crack cocaine, Rob overcome his problems and will be the focus of my paper. (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023) What were the factors that led to addiction? 1 Rob had no one to watch out for him when he was a kid. Night after night, he would check on his unconscious mother, never knowing if she would regain consciousness. A friend helped him out when he needed it most in high school and introduced him to crack cocaine. I asked him whether it was that drug that had him addicted and he said, I wouldn't say that I was ever hooked to any drug, others would have different opinions and I can understand why. I now see that I was mistaken about my addiction at the time. Now I see that crack cocaine was a way for me to temporarily escape my difficulties, reality, and stress. I could have stopped whenever I wanted to, but I chose not to. (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023)
UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION 3 How do the factors that led to addiction correlate with factors presented in the book as components of addiction? The four C's of addiction provide a significant foundation for distinguishing addiction as a mental health concern that requires intervention from other types of addictive behaviors. The framework of the four C's encompasses four distinct components, namely compulsion, cravings, consequences, and control. How did the addiction affect the individual's life? Rob's addiction began when he was thirteen and grew steadily worse over the years. At the age of fifteen, he had already developed a chronic addiction to cocaine and heroin. Rob tells me with a disappointed expression, "Drugs were what my whole existence revolved around." When he turned sixteen, things quickly deteriorated. Rob had no house and slept under a bridge every night. According to what he told me, "I called it going camping, I knew I was in denial." He was employed, but he spent every cent he earned on drugs. Why would you do that?" I questioned. Putting one's own health and happiness first makes perfect sense. When questioned further, he just admits, "Drugs became more significant than my well-being and those around me." (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023) How did the addiction affect the lives of those close to the individual? Rob's addiction had worsened by the time he was sixteen, and his entire world had begun to fall apart. Later, he realizes he needs to make some adjustments. He has tried many different approaches to effect this transformation. He had hoped that friends, church, and family would provide this solace for him. He didn't realize that this wasn't enough to overcome his addiction. He had to find out the hard way that he required further assistance. Professional medical assistance was required for him. Eventually, he made up his mind to check into a rehabilitation center. His words to me:

UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION 4 "probably one of the most challenging decisions of his life." (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023) Cocaine is the pure chemical hydrochloride of cocaine, and it looks like a white powder or rock crystal. Cocaine is a substance that has euphoric effects. Basically, it interferes with how your body and brain work. Cocaine is not a substance to mess around with, and its effects are profound. Cocaine's "high" effect, which may be used to describe its use, may linger for up to 15 minutes after ingestion. Cocaine, like other drugs, can help you feel more awake after just one dose, but its effects can quickly become dangerous if you overuse it. Cocaine use is a serious and potentially fatal choice, regardless of how good it feels in the time. Rob warned that substance abuse may leave a devastating mark on loved ones. Most addicts have been abusing substances for many years, and they have no plans to stop or even recognize that they have a problem. In cases like mine, denial is common. (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023) My entire existence was altered by substance misuse. For a very long time, drugs controlled my life, but I finally hit bottom. Everything that meant anything to me is gone. I lost everything of value to me, including my house, my car, and my friends and family. This thing spiraled out of control to the point where I was arrested and forced to go to court. Getting hit by "the rocks at the bottom" hurt more than anything else, but I'm grateful it happened since it set me on the road to recovery. I had to reboot my entire existence. A lot of people stopped looking up to me and stopped trusting me. My pride was shattered. Because of drugs, I lost sight of what was truly significant in life. (R. Peterson, personal communication, September 15, 2023)
UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION 5 There are many obstacles and surprises in life, but sometimes we simply must keep moving forward. Some people will go to great lengths to avoid any potential difficulties. No worries: that's why there are kind souls in the world who are prepared to lend a hand. You can only truly comprehend another person if you make the effort to learn about their trials and the constraints under which they operate. To aid another person does not need much effort. What matters more than the actual events themselves is how you react to them. It's the nicest feeling in the world to be able to help someone who's in need. I haven't really made a difference in anyone's life, but I've always been there when they needed me. Whether they ask for my help or not, and regardless of whether others approve, I will always be there for them. When someone else is in need, I will never abandon them. I never provide counsel, even when solicited for it, and I never persuade anyone to do anything against their better judgment. I find it most helpful to simply be present so that I may lend my moral support. If something bad happens to the person who asked for my advice, I don't want it to be my fault. I'm more of a cheerleader than a counselor. In this article, I will discuss how I plan to deal with the challenges of this position and how my past experiences may serve me well in the future.
