Dasia Torbert PSYC3100 Thinking about the Intersections of Gender and Sexuality with Other Social Identity Groups Your Social Identity Groups: Gender: Woman Sex: Female Sexual Orientation: Bisexual Race: Biracial Ethnicity: Greek, Switzerland, African American Religion/Spirituality: Christian Social Class: Upper Middle class Age: Young adult (Dis)Ability: Person with invisible disability Body Size/Type: Person of size Language: Native English 1. The most important parts of my identity are my race, sexual orientation, and age, because I am part of Generation Z and with me being part of both the LGBTQIA+ community and a minority group, I am uniquely in a phase in my life right now where my identity is something I should embrace. 2. I believe the first thing people notice about me is my sex and race. Most people do not know that I am bisexual, as I am newly in a relationship with my girlfriend. But since I present myself as very feminine and clearly biracial, most people stigmatize me for those stereotypes. If I had to choose, sex might be the identity that has the biggest impact on my interactions because of the stigma that people with a male identity have placed on me, leaving me with my own unique stigma against men. Not that I cannot be around them or have a conversation with them; I just believe almost everything can be too good to be true. 3. My race and sexual orientation would lead me to experience negative stereotyping. I remember a time when both were used against me. I was a little girl in a gas station in rural South Carolina. I walked in with my white mom and little (biracial) brother to use the restroom on a road trip and was immediately met with disgusted looks and glares from all of the other white people in the gas station. And as we were leaving, one of the people told my mom to get her raccoon kids out of here. 4. Growing up in an upper-middle-class background can be seen as a privileged aspect of my identity. It allowed me to experience things, travel to new places, and have the luxury
Dasia Torbert PSYC3100 of not worrying about money at such a young age. I was able to fully focus on chasing my dreams and enjoying being a kid. 5. I believe being a biracial, bisexual, young female gives me a unique perspective on the world, where I kind of fall in between “categories”. I grew up being biracial and had many external and internal disagreements about my identity and what exactly it means to me to own who I am, but now that I am newly part of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have another identity where I am sexually attracted to both men and women. But with the help of the experiences I already went through with race, I have a better understanding of how to navigate the stigma that comes with coming out as bisexual. 6. Learning about and understanding intersectionality was both eye-opening and thought- provoking. Understanding the intersections of various aspects of my identity helped me recognize the complexities of human experiences and the ways in which privilege and poverty can overlap. It can also lead to a better understanding of the issues that people with many marginalized identities experience, as well as the need to push for equity and inclusivity.
