Dasia Torbert PSYC3100 Exam 2 Extra Credit I chose to analyze the fictional character Renly Baratheon from one of my favorite shows, Game of Thrones. "Game of Thrones" is based on George R.R. Martin's book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" and has become an international bestseller, recognized for its intriguing characters and plotlines. Renly's character is just one example of how the series dealt with significant societal issues while creating a compelling and captivating story. His character's journey is important not only for its part in the story as a whole but also for showing what it's like to be LGBTQ+ in a political climate that is often harsh and complicated. His path from hiding his sexuality to finally coming out with pride shows how hard it is for many people to find acceptance in the real world. Renly Baratheon's journey from hiding his sexual identity to openly embracing it is a genuine picture of the internal battles that many LGBTQ+ people face. However, because "Game of Thrones" is set in a mythical medieval environment, his experiences are seen through a fictional lens. Yet his character's experiences demonstrate similarities to real-life coming-out stories. We can use Cass' Model of Homosexual Identity Development to analyze Renly Baratheon's path during his time on the show. His path to understanding that he is gay is a lot like the model that was talked about in the lecture. In the first level, awareness, Renly knows he is gay due to his overwhelming attraction to a high-ranked warrior, Ser Loras Tyrell, but at first, he tries to hide it because of the rules and norms of a medieval society. As he moves on to the second stage, comparison, he starts to see and connect with other gay people, especially Ser Loras Tyrell, who becomes his lover. In the third stage, tolerance, Renly is more open about his sexuality and chooses to stay with Loras even though it could have terrible consequences. Renly becomes comfortable with his identity and connection in the fourth stage: acceptance, finally proclaiming himself openly gay. In the fifth stage, "pride," Renly bravely accepts his sexuality, going against social norms, and becomes a character in "Game of Thrones" known for being true to himself and authentically portraying his LGBTQ+ identity.
