Name: Richa Gupta Science & technology | Dad brain (09/22/2022) Para 1: Executive Summary Economist opens the article by talking about the changes that are occurred to a woman’s body during pregnancy, but he also states that these changes are not only limited to females. A paper published in Madrid has established that certain part of the brain shrinks in both males and females when they conceive. This study was conducted by Dr. Martínez- García’s on 40 expectant fathers and 17 Spanish men who were not about to become fathers. 2 MRI scans were conducted one before and one after childbirth. On comparing both scans it was confirmed that there is a decrease in the volume of cortices though it is small. The cerebral cortex is a part of the brain responsible for perception, language, and cognition. However, the shrinkage occurred at the back of the cortex which is associated with daydreaming, mind- wandering, and thinking about self and others. These results are similar to the outcomes of the study which was conducted in 2017 on first-time mothers in Nature neuroscience. The difference is less pronounced in first- time fathers’ brains as compared to mothers but the result is the same. A questionnaire about understanding the baby's signals and affection towards offspring suggests that postpartum mothers are very much attached to the babies. Currently, it is impossible to determine exactly how these neural changes that occur in men post-pregnancy but it is quite visible that in human beings parental attitude differences are quite visible in both genders. Para 2: My opinion Being a parent changes the whole perspective of life. Mothers in general are connected to their babies from the point when they conceive but parenthood brings in a lot of attitude changes in men as well. Priorities in life change when adults enter this phase, this brings out a mixture of emotions. People tend to start caring, they think about their babies before thinking about themselves also now they understand or perceive things from a parent's viewpoint. Some people from their experiences tell that they understand their parents better now after becoming a pattern. Emotions are controlled by the brain and how one perceives the surroundings. One of the articles published in 2021 in the New York Times states the result of one of the studies which were conducted by Lee Gettler, an American anthropologist. He identified 624 single, childless men in the Philippines from age 21 to 26. He found that while all men in the study experienced normal, age-related dips in testosterone, the 465 men who became dads during those five years experienced a more significant drop. Testosterone is largely responsible for motivating men to find partners so once men enter their parenthood phase they evolve for some of that testosterone to go. Thus the evidence from these studies and normal behavior suggest that changes occur in the brain of both the genders.
