1 3.2 Assignment: Vignette Reflection Sharmaine Morgan Indiana Wesleyan University 4WI Interview Skills Human Services Theresa Veach February 12, 2024
2 3.2 Assignment: Vignette Reflection Attending Behaviors While watching this video, the first thing I had observed was the fearfulness and nervousness in the clients' eyes. Right away, the interviewer asks the client to tell her story so he can better understand her living situation. As the client is speaking, the counselor is looking the client in the eyes to show interest and observation skills. The counselor nods verbally to encourage the client to continue with her story. The client is confused about what to do about her situation, but the interviewer is right there to give empathy. The counselor also reiterates to the client about her being confused and torn with the situation she is dealing with. He is listening to develope a relationship with the client. He supports the client with individually and culturally appropriate visuals, vocal quality, verbal tracking, and body language. Reflection of Content (paraphrasing) The counselor shows reflection of content when the client starts discussing her living situation. During this, the counselor identifies the clients' emotions and feeds them back to clarify affective experience. With some clients, a brief acknowledgement of feelings may be more appropriate. (pg. 111). The counselor reflects on the client as she said she felt scared, torn, and even mad. She even has anger towards her unborn child's father. Paraphrasing and summarizing are more cognitively oriented, focusing primarily on words and concepts. (pg. 111). Reflection of Feeling (paraphrasing) Reflection of feelings involves observing emotions, naming them, and repeating them back to the client. In this situation, the counselor brings back when she says she's scared, torn, and even mad about her situation. The client goes on to say she has future plans for herself and maybe having the baby will ruin them, plus the support wouldn’t be there.
3 Use of focusing the session Focusing is a skill that enables multiple telling of the story and will help you and clients think of new possibilities for change. In the counselor and client session, the counselor is making sure he is focused on the client and all that she must get out. He makes sure he is engaging in parts he feels she needs advice on and just understanding on what she is feeling. The counselor helps the client expand their story and describe their issues from multiple frames of references. The counselor is asking her questions to make sure he understands the client, like is she positive her parents would disown her if she had the baby. The client then goes to say they would be very mad at her if she smoked or did drugs. The counselor said but never did the parents say disown. Reflection or probing for meaning Reflection of meaning is concerned with helping clients find deeper meanings underlying their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The counselor reflects on what he hears the client say and asks prob questions to help the client find the source of her feelings. The counselor says that pregnancy at this point will basically ruin everything in her life. The client goes on to say she can't do it on her own and doesn’t feel ready or think she's responsible enough. The counselor says he's impressed by her being eighteen, that she has talked through each option and gathered information to talk to someone the client trusts. My client's observation is that I see how she views herself and the people around her. If only she could build up the courage to talk to her parents, because even though she feels her parents will disown her, this may be the biggest blessing the Lord has for her. The clients' facial expressions and body language show that she is confused and very scared. I feel my current skills are improving, just by reading the textbook and seeing this interview. I feel like I have already improved on how to interview clients. The main point is to make sure the

4 clients are understood and felt listened to. As the counselor listens the questions just flow because that's how in tune I will be with my clients.
