SAT515 - Counseling Theory & Practice - Theory Comparison Charts Name of Theory: Cognitive Behavioral Theory Student Name: student Time period & key people (at least two) associated with this approach: Aaron Beck, Albert Ellis 1960s View of human nature & basic assumptions (at least 2) underlying this approach: CBT views of human nature are rooted in the idea that humans have the capacity for change and growth. CBT is on the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected and that we can change others by changing one. Operates on the belief that the brain is the most important aspect in relation to the way that an individual behaves or thinks. This perspective states that to understand someone, you must first be able to understand what is happening in their mind. Key concepts essential to this theory: (3 or more) Identifying and changing negative thought patterns, developing problem-solving skills, and engaging in behavioral experiments to test the validity of automatic thoughts. Most important goals in this frame: (3 or more) The development of self-control by teaching the client specific techniques to identify and challenge distorted thinking. Prevention of future episodes of emotional distress and development of personal growth by helping clients change core beliefs. Alleviate distress by helping patients to develop more adaptive cognitions and behaviors. How (if at all) does this theory address issues of systemic oppression? CBT has an individualistic focus; it sees problems as coming from an individual’s thoughts and corresponding behaviors and ignores forms of structural oppression. This method fails to see how an individual’s problems can stem from social interactions and behaviors and are often the result of unequal power dynamics and oppressive social structures. This is problematic and limiting because CBT does not address systemic issues as a source of an individual’s problems. Describe the role of the therapeutic Necessary but insufficient condition for change. Cognitive-behavioral therapists seek to learn what their clients want out of life (their
relationship: goals) and then help their clients achieve those goals. The therapist's role is to listen, teach, and encourage, while the client's roles is to express concerns, learn, and implement that learning. Key techniques from this model: (name at least 2) Cognitive restructuring or reframing, Guided discovery, Exposure therapy, Journaling and thought records, Activity scheduling and behavior activation, Behavioral experiments, Relaxation and stress reduction techniques, Role playing. Strengths and contributions of the approach: Improve relationships by helping individuals learn effective communication skills and conflict resolution techniques, providing patients with hope, supporting self-esteem, helping people unwind or relax, and supporting rational thought processes. How does this theory address the wellness philosophy of the Counseling profession? In everyday experience, the way we 'frame' a situation whether in positive or negative terms will determine the way we feel about it and how we behave in it. CBT encourages people to challenge their negative thoughts to develop more flexible, realistically optimistic ways of thinking about difficult situations, emphasizing strength and personal choice. Discuss an Expressive Arts process that ‘fits’ this theory & why: Through story-making, character-making, and mask-making, children can practice CBT tools and techniques. Problem-solving skills, fine motor skills, abstract thinking, and practice of patience. Have participants decorate the inside of their masks with paint to represent feelings they sometimes hide or cover up. Then, have participants paint the outside of their masks to represent the feelings they often outwardly display. Encourages self-reflection, expression, identifies negative thoughts, and it will sometimes allow you to start difficult conversations.
