Reflection Assignment The Troubled Mind Psych 1100D, Summer 2021 Dr. McGinty Instructions : Download the attached worksheet. Fill out this worksheet entirely, following all instructions. Then upload it to the appropriate assignment folder on Carmen. Imagine that you've been given $1 million to design a campaign to educate Ohio State students about psychological disorders and reduce stigma. What are three specific things that you would do with the money? Why? Be sure to cite the textbook (either the Troubled Mind chapter or an earlier one!) to support your reasoning for EACH suggestion. (1.5 points) Suggestion #1: Launch a campaign on campus to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health. We can put up posters, post content on social media, and organize events where students can learn more about psychological disorders. By spreading accurate information and fostering understanding, we can create a more supportive community. (Lecture Video, History of Psychotherapy, Part 1) (1.5 points) Suggestion #2: Invest in mental health services. I would hire more professionals, expand counseling resources, and make therapy and support groups more accessible to students. When there is help that's available, students are more likely to seek it out. By prioritizing these resources, a real change can be made for Ohio State students. (Lecture Video, History of Psychotherapy, Part 1) (1.5 points) Suggestion #3: Peer support would be my last suggestion. I would want to create student-led programs that allow students to connect and support each other. Sometimes talking to someone who has gone through a similar experience can be of huge help. We can create a safe and inclusive environment by building a sense of community and empathy among students. (Lecture Video, History of Psychotherapy, Part 2)
(1 point) What is something that you used to believe about psychological disorders that was changed/you know longer believe because of what you learned in the Troubled Mind chapter? Something that I used to believe about Schizophrenia that was changed is that I didn’t know there were positive or negative symptoms, I thought the person would be scared all the time. I never would have thought that delusions would be a positive symptom unless you see a loved one that’s passed away and brings you joy to see and talk to them. I didn’t know that people with schizophrenia deal with avolition, I just thought that they go on with their day and have a panic attack when they see delusions. (1.5 points) If you could share just ONE piece of information from this chapter with your closest friends and family, what would it be? Be sure to include a citation from either the textbook or lecture videos in your response. “Sensory grounding--- focusing on external rather than internal stimuli--- can be helpful for panic attacks.” (Lecture Video, Anxiety disorders) Is one piece of information from The Troubling Mind Chapter that I would share with my closest friends and family. Now consider the following scenario: A group of researchers wants to explore the relationship between mask wearing and helping behavior. To examine this relationship, the researchers conduct a correlational study with a sample of 100 students, each tested individually in 1-on-1 situations between the experimenter and the participant. As a participant would enter a waiting room, the experimenter would drop a stack of papers. The experimenter was interested in whether the participant would assist in picking up the dropped papers and whether the likelihood of providing assistance differed based on whether the participant was wearing a mask. Results showed that participants who were not wearing masks, on average, were more likely to help. This indicates a negative correlation between mask wearing and helping to pick up papers. With this particular study in mind, answer BOTH of the following questions: Now imagine that a journalist decides to write a news story on the above research finding. The title of her story is “The Hidden Truth: Hiding Behind a Mask Causes People to be Less Helpful”. (2 points) Is this an accurate description of the results? Why or why not? Hint: Be sure to cite either textbook or lecture videos from the Measuring the Mind chapter. The title "The Hidden Truth: Hiding Behind a Mask Causes People to be Less Helpful" is not an accurate description of the results. Even though the study did find a negative correlation
between mask wearing and people helping, it doesn't mean there is evidence that hiding behind a mask actually causes people to be less helpful. Correlation does not imply causation, and there may be other confounding variables or third variables at play that contribute. It's important to remember that we should be careful about interpreting correlational studies and not make definitive claims about behavior based on only the results. (Lecture Video, Experiments: Problems with Drawing Cause-and-Effect Conclusions) (1.5 points) Describe how you would change the study design to make this research project an experiment. To change the study design into an experiment, I would randomly assign participants to two groups: one group wearing masks and another group not wearing masks. Both groups would be exposed to the same scenario of the experimenter dropping papers. By manipulating the presence of the mask, we can examine the causal effect of wearing a mask on helping behavior. To ensure validity, it would be important to control for any potential confounding variables that might influence the relationship between mask wearing and helping behavior. (1 point) What would be the advantages of conducting this study with an experimental design? Conducting this study with an experimental design has a few advantages. First, it allows for the establishment of a causal relationship between mask wearing and helping behavior. By randomly assigning participants to different conditions, we can confidently attribute any differences in helping behavior to the manipulation of the mask. Second, an experimental design means that there is more control over confounding variables, and so by controlling the experimental conditions we can minimize the influence of external factors on the results. Last, an experimental design provides stronger internal validity, which makes the findings more reliable and valid. (0.5 points) What results do you predict for your experiment? There are a few possible outcomes that I think can happen. If people have a negative view of masks, then people wearing them might be seen as less approachable and therefore receive less help. However, there's also a chance that people might view mask-wearers as more vulnerable and in need of help, which could actually lead to an increase in helping behavior. Ultimately, the specific results would depend on factors like the context of the situation, people's personal attitudes, and how the experiment is set up.
