Week 7 Reflection Assignment Wilmington University Hrm 340 Aside from the first assignment—choosing a theory to build our final thesis on—nothing else from this class has stayed with me. Because it seemed to need knowledge of not just the
theory but also the background, viewpoint, and reasoning behind each concept, this seemed the most significant. First of all, it was discouraging since I had no clue who was on the list. Their whole discussion was a shambles, and it was far worse than not understanding them or their positions. My expanded knowledge in these areas has given me unfettered access to a treasure trove of fresh data about educational and developmental issues. The most convincing argument was that put out by B.F. Skinner, while I recognize the validity of behaviorism and Carl Rogers's theory. Since I found humanistic psychology theory to be an interesting and relevant field to explore further, I was thinking of basing my dissertation on the premise that people could thrive in an environment that encouraged openness, tolerance, and empathy, which is central to Carl Rogers's work. My research led me to believe that behaviorism, as advocated by B.F. Skinner, was the best theory to apply to my situation. The idea of learning more about this subject and then applying what I had learned first piqued my interest. I felt compelled to bring it up since so many people understood it. It goes by a lot of names, including instrumental and operant conditioning. In its most basic form, it's a way of teaching whereby the result of a response determines either the next step to take or the likelihood that it will be repeated; the core principle is that the likelihood of an action's recurrence is increased when it's good and decreased when it's bad. The simplest basic way to describe this approach is antagonist conditioning. Since I often employ B.F. Skinner's concepts while training my children, my thoughts have moved from Carl Rogers to him. My sincere wish is that he might bestow upon me some sound parenting wisdom if I read his works on a more frequent basis.
