RES 820C-O500 – The Literature Landscape: Psychology T1DQ1: Consider the research article by Walter and Stouck (2020) provided in this topic. The article has all the major sections of empirical research (abstract, introduction, literature review, methods, discussion, implications, and recommendations). Without addressing the article's content specifically, how would you characterize the purpose of the literature review section? What roles does it serve? What is the section attempting to achieve as a part of the research write up? How does it influence the other sections of the empirical research article? The main purpose of the literature review section is to collect and provide a synthesized overview of resources relevant to the topic of interest, make a critical analysis of the resources, and relate them to the current work, helping to provide a focal point to the research paper (Walter and Stouck, 2020). The role of the review is to create a picture for the reader of what the research is discussing. There can be provided a background for understanding the paper’s topic, an organization of resources used, also a critical evaluation of previous studies to both contrast and compare prior findings. A literature review section that is adequately written can act as a springboard for research conducted in the future, providing readers with an overview of theories, current data, or any methods that can identify gaps in the current knowledge and research. The section is attempting to achieve a means for the researcher to discuss the need for additional research as well. It influences other sections of the empirical research by looking at the limitations of other research and attempts to fill in those gaps. Also, by providing in depth analysis to the literature it allows time for dialogue development. Walter, L., & Stouck, J. (2020). Writing the Literature Review: Graduate Student Experiences. Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning , 11 (1). T1DQ2: Refer to the requirements for the Topic 8 Dissertation Development assignment and develop a search strategy for completing this assignment. As you search for articles to complete your Topic 8 Dissertation Development assignment, it is worth considering how and where you conduct your searches. Beyond using keyword searches and “mining” the reference list for additional publications, you can find journals that publish in your specific field. For example, in the area of psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA) has divisions that are devoted to different areas of psychology and many of those divisions publish journals with peer-reviewed empirical research articles. These journals are often highly rated and serve as a conduit to literature specific to your field. Go to the APA website and find the division(s) that most closely match your emphasis area (and topic) and review what journals are available. What did you find? How does this type of search allow you to identify relevant literature? How does this add to your understanding of the expansiveness of your field of study and the literature available to determine the need for a study? Explain. Although I am still trying to completely narrow down my dissertation topic, I am attempting to find a beautiful merger of researching the generational differences in reaction to workplace discrimination and the affect that stereotypes have on the drive of minority women in Corporate America. Having searched the American Psychological Association (APA) website, there are fourteen (14) journals related to my subject of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology and Management. Human behavior is at the forefront of my research and this type of search definitely cuts down on aimless exploration of random book, websites, or other knowledge databases. This narrows down topic relevancy and allows for better time management. A simple
google search on the topic of Industrial and Organizational Psychology articles yielded 46 million results. There is absolutely no logical way to review that much information for my dissertation and I am absolutely sure that majority of the results will be completely irrelevant to the topic and extremely uncredible. Utilizing websites like the APA allow for quick and concise research opportunities that also prove relevant and credible. I will also, over the course of this program, utilize library resources. Although I am a Millennial, born shortly before the technological takeover, I can truly appreciate a “brick and mortar” library with physical books to hold. Research has proven that in a study determining whether the Notre Dame library collection met the needs of graduate students, a citation analysis of what 248 students cited in their dissertations, 76% were available in the library (Kayongo and Helm, 2012). Relevance of library collections for graduate student research: A citation analysis study of doctoral dissertations at Notre Dame.   College & Research Libraries ,   73 (1), 47-67.
