Discussion Four Hello everyone, The risk to benefit ratio of interrogation techniques associated with false confessions is generally considered high. Using coercive methods can lead to undermining "public confidence in the police and reduce the willingness of citizens to cooperate with law enforcement; it may also remove inhibitions against lying in other important contexts, such as testifying in court"(Costanzo & Krauss, 2020). Adopting ethical and evidence-based approaches is crucial for obtaining reliable information without compromising the integrity of the legal process. Research suggests that coercive interrogation techniques are not necessarily more effective in obtaining legitimate confessions. Ethical and non-coercive methods are often more reliable in producing accurate information while preserving the rights of the individuals involved (Jones & Penrod, 2017). Employing fair and evidence-based approaches is generally recommended for effective and just interrogations. Forensic experts can provide valuable assistance to law enforcement during interrogations by offering expertise in areas such as crime scene analysis, forensic psychology, and behavioral profiling. They may help interpret physical evidence, provide insights into the behavior of suspects, and contribute to the overall investigative process. This collaboration enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of interrogations, aiding in the pursuit of justice. After a suspect confesses, "forensic experts can evaluate the state of mind of the accused and their overall understanding of the situation and return an opinion on the validity of the confession and probability of the prosecutor’s narrative"(Padowitz, 2018). This helps strengthen the case and provides additional assurance regarding the accuracy of the confession. Forensic experts contribute to the overall investigative process, ensuring that the evidence aligns cohesively with the statements made during the confession. Costanzo, M., & Krauss, D. (2020).
