Report
1 Michael Vaughn Department of Psychology PSY 2319 Dr. Kowai-Bell February 9, 2024 Social Psychology Project Chapter 15: Social Psychology in Court Part 3 Three Powerful Points: 1. Misinformation Effect: “ Incorporating “misinformation” into one’s memory of the event after witnessing an event and receiving misleading information about it” (p. 101). For a witness, this can be a challenge if an investigator asks questions or “suggests” something to make the witness believe they saw or heard the same thing. Furthermore, it becomes incorporated into this witness’s memory, and it will be recalled later on as false information. Application: As another illustration, I once had a vivid dream about my father being at a high school baseball game where I was a pitcher, and I was pitching a terrible game. Afterwards, my father caused a scene and embarrassed me so bad in front of the coaches and teammates. My father stormed off and my teammates teased me endlessly and my first girlfriend broke up with me. Moreover, every time my father came to a game after that dream, I dreaded it and ended up quitting the team. The misinformation effect certainly caused a sense of fear I could not overcome in reality. 2. Reactance: “ A motive to protect or restore one’s sense of freedom. Reactance arises when someone threatens our freedom of action” (p. 102). It could be considered a form of resistance against the establishment or someone in power (ex. judge). Thomas Jefferson once said, “ A little rebellion is good now and then” and I think he was leaning towards what is “good” for the people against an oppressive situation. In the case of a juror, reactance could be against a judge’s instruction or a prosecutor’s demand (p. 102) which could provoke negative emotions, as if you are questioning their ability to make decisions in the legal arena . Application: there were many people who complained about wearing a mask, and I think many of them did it to anger a store owner or other customers because they were told “they had to” or did not believe the news about the pandemic. Also, the HOA where I live is status quo, and the woman at the head of the board does not account for the assessments, so no one knows where the money is spent. When I challenged the issue of raising assessments, I found myself targeted for gossip and ignored for roofing problems. However, they sent me a letter stating I needed a new sticker on my car, I took my time getting just because they are a toxic organization and the woman at the head of the board has the power to write threatening letters for little things because you have questioned her control over the money. And yes, reactance occurred for someone had to fight for the homeowner’s rights. Reference Myers, D. G., & Twenge, J. M. (2022). Social psychology (14th ed.). McGraw-Hill.
