Initial Survey Design Template Melissa Temen 08/27/23 Instructions: Record your responses on the template below each question and upload this document as your assessment submission. Do not change any of the items on the template except to add or delete space. 1. What is the topic of your survey? There have been many studies to determine the long-term effects traumatic abuse has on its victims, but what about the children? Children aren't immune to what happened even if they were not directly abused. The collateral damage suffered by the victim’s children is very different than that of the parent who was the target of the abuser. They have a much deeper and darker impact on the children caught in the crossfire. I intend to use this study to provide data supporting my theory. 2. Why is the topic important? How might the results of the study be used in your personal or professional life? I was married to a covert narcissist for 12 years. We have one son, and I have two boys from my first marriage. Little by little, the gas-lighting, emotional, and physical attacks slowly began to break me. Although I have little recollection of significant periods when my conscious mind was blocked out, they remain vivid to my boys. My boys saw physical violence, manipulation, and emotional abuse; they could do nothing about it. Instead of being children, they were forced into the role of my protector, robbing them of what is considered a normal childhood. The results of this study will help professionals working with victims and survivors to be more effective in the healing process and break the silence imposed on the children by allowing them a safe place to express their fears and concerns. 3. What are the potential variables to be included in data gathering? You must include at least three variables that might be a part of your study. Write a minimum of one paragraph describing your potential variables. Variables needed to create the data necessary will include children from environments that no longer contain the abuser as well as those in which the abuser remains. Not only will we be able to determine the effects the abuse has caused, but how the effects differ between female and male children. 4. Define the population to be studied. Write 1–3 sentences describing your target population. Include specific characteristics, including age range, gender, location, and any other identifiers unique and relevant to your population. Group one will include victims from environments that no longer contain the abuser and will be divided into equal numbers of male and female participants. Group two will include victims from environments still containing the abuser and will be divided into equal numbers of male and female participants.
5. Explain why this is the best population for your study. Write at least one the paragraph analyzing why you have chosen this population for your study. Abusive environments can have very different effects on male and female children, and beyond that, the results need to consider whether the abuser still exists in that environment. Children are greatly influenced by their environments and relationship models; they will use them to shape their adult relationships. I predict there will be significant differences in the effects of children who remain in abusive situations compared to those who have not. These environments profoundly impact children, but the resulting impact varies between boys and girls. These differences must be identified to create a therapeutic environment where they can feel safe to express themselves. These considerations will offer children a higher success rate in recovering from the trauma created by the abuse.
