Report
Friday, October 6, 2023 Observation Report 1. First name of the child you are observing. Melody 2. Date and time (beginning and ending) of observation. Friday, October 6, 2023 at 9am-10am 3. Name, address and phone number of school or daycare you are observing, (1): Child Development at Pierce 4. Description of child, including age (2): She is 2 years old. She is blonde with blue eyes. She was wearing gray pants and a green top. Physical Domain: 5. Describe two different gross motor skills observed. Be specific: Include the setting/situation. Then describe the skill in detail. Be sure to underline or italicize the gross motor skill in each example. (4) Melody would walk around and bring me toys. In this observation assignment I was told not to interact with the child but she would come up to me and bring me toys. But she wouldn’t say anything. When I first walked in she was eating breakfast, she finished and she came up to the trash area and threw her trash away and wiped off her table. 6. Describe two different fine motor skills observed (as above). Be sure to underline or italicize the fine motor skill in each example. (4) They were playing with instruments and she was using her hands to shake the toy. She then started playing with different toys and didn’t want to go outside and play because she was having such a good time. The toy she was playing with was like a puzzle. 7. Give two examples of physical coordination. At least one example should be hand-eye coordination. (4) Physical coordination would when Melody is trying to ride the tricycle but can’t because she is too tiny. So instead she will use her feet to move her around and she’s pretty fast for not using the pedals. Hand-eye coordination would be when she is trying to put the puzzle pieces together and trying to see what piece fits with each other. 8. What did you notice about the child’s general health? Look for illness, appetite, tiredness or any other indication of health. (2) She looks happy and excited to play. She seems healthy and in good condition.
9. What is your assessment of the child's physical development? This should be subjective, and may include answers from any or all of the questions above. Think about typical development and also about the other children in the setting. (3) I feel like her development is a little bit slower than typical two year olds because she should be able to talk. Her responses consist of a smile and nodding her head. With the occasional yes and no. I didn’t hear her say a couple words together. Cognitive Domain 10. Give an example of the child’s use of receptive language. (2) Melody understands what people are saying to her but doesn't communicate back. They were singing the good morning song and she was just doing her own thing with the toys and didn’t sing along. 11. Give an example of the child’s use of expressive language. (2) She knows how to communicate by pointing and looking around but doesn’t want to use her words. 12. Describe one example of behavior which showed the Piagetian concept of construction of knowledge. (2) This was when Melody saw another child playing with the toys she thought it was okay to but she didn’t get ask. 13. Give two examples of behaviors indicating pre-operational thinking. Be sure to label the concepts you are giving the examples for. (4) One example is when melody couldn’t reach the petals on the trickle. The second example would be when they were said to drop and she laid herself on the floor and covered her head. 14. Give one example of the child being scaffolded. Include your interpretation of the child's ZPD and the actions of the 'guide.' (3) When Melody was putting the puzzle together she was getting annoyed that some of the pieces didn't go in the right way. 15. Give an example of the child using long-term memory. (1) When she knew what they ate for breakfast. Like she was talking about breakfast 45 minutes after breakfast, saying words like breakfast and cereal. 16. In your opinion , is the child at the same level in this domain of development (cognitive) as other children their age, or at a different level? Explain. (3) I think that she is at a different level and is running a little bit slower. I feel like the kids her age usually communicate a little bit better and are talking more. Social-Emotional Domain
17. Describe two different examples of the types of play you observed, using the Parten theory. (4) One example could be when she was playing with the toys she would ignore what the teacher was singing and saying instead she wanted to do her own thing. The second thing is they were playing music all together and shared the toys. 18. Give an example of the child showing Erikson's emotional task, autonomy (2) When she was eating breakfast she got her shirt a little bit wet, so she took it off and gave it to the teacher. The teacher took it from her and she put it on. 19. Give an example of the child showing Erikson's emotional task, initiative (2) This could be when Melody was trying to figure out how to ride the trickle without the pedals because she couldn’t reach them. 20. Give two examples describing how the child expressed his or her emotions? (4) The first example could be when she found the stuffed animal she likes and she looked excited and happy. The second example could be when she was struggling to put the cereal she didn't finish in the trash. 21. Describe a behavior that showed the child's attachment to an adult in the setting. How would you characterize the attachment, using terms we learned in class. (2) She would go to the teacher when she didn’t know how to do something. For example she went up to the teacher to get a new shirt because hers was wet and she didn't like the feeling of having a wet shirt on. 22. In your opinion, is the child at the same level in this domain of development (social-emotional) as other children their age, or at a different level? Explain. (3) I think she is at the same level as her age. She is really good at communicating without her words and didn’t look like she got upset easily. 23. What three questions were left in your mind as you conclude this observation? Be sure that you include a question for each of the three domains. All questions must include your reason for asking the question .(6) 1) Why do all the children act differently if they are in the same environment? They're all relatively the same age so why do they act less and more mature if they're together. 2) Does the way you speak to the child make a difference? I think this because the teachers would talk in a certain tone when they spoke to the children. 3) Does it make a difference how the child is treated? If one child is getting more attention will the others start getting mad and throw a tantrum? Like why do the teachers treat the kids differently?
