Grinnell 1 Samantha Grinnell CDFS 212 Week 5 Assignment 1. Using your existing knowledge of the toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood and adolescent developmental period to date, which theory (i.e., Erikson's psychosocial theory, Piaget's cognitive developmental theory, Bandura's social learning theory, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory), do you think best explains development during the preschool years (3-5 years)? Why? In my opinion I feel that Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory best explains development during the preschool years. This theory puts a big emphasis on the importance of social interactions, cultural context, as well as language in cognitive development. Children in preschool years are actively engaged in their social and cultural environments. Vygotsky argues that these experiences are responsible to shaping their cognitive development, problem-solving skills, and socioemotional development. 2. Using your existing knowledge of each developmental period which theory (i.e., Erikson's psychosocial theory, Piaget's cognitive developmental theory, Bandura's social learning theory, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory), do you think best explains development during the elementary school years (6-9)? Why? The theory that I feel best explains the development during the elementary school years would again be Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. During the elementary school years children are still heavily relying on social interactions for learning and development. Vygotsky’s theory helps to show how big of a role social interactions really do play part in children learning and development. 3. Through a cultural lens, how might these theories differ or stay similar when children grow up in different social or cultural backgrounds? Please reference Chapter 1 in your text on culture to justify your answer. When looking at the different developmental theories through a cultural lens it’s important to know that children who grow up in different social or cultural backgrounds may experience variations in how these theories are used and interpreted.Chapter 1 talks about how some children are given many opportunities for social interaction before they start elementary school and there are other children who are getting those experiences for the first time when they enter grade school. The theories could then differ in the aspect because of different social or cultural backgrounds where they children either stay home until grade school or are in different social settings like daycare and preschool before entering grade school. Cultural variations could also influence the pace and content of cognitive development. Cultural variations may lead to differences in the expression, emphasis, and application of developmental principles, but the developmental processes and human needs remain similar across diverse cultural backgrounds.
