SPU-101 Final Exam _____/30 Name: Emma Stalsitz 1. How does play help the social and emotional development of preschoolers? (2pts.) Play is an important part of social and emotional development for children. Through play, children can express their feelings and learn to cope with sadness, anger, and fear. Additionally, play also helps children develop social skills such as sharing, cooperation, and communication. 2. What impact does a hearing impairment have on a child’s learning when it occurs post- lingual? (2 pts) Children with hearing loss have difficulty with all areas of academic achievement, especially reading and mathematical concepts. Children with mild to moderate hearing loss, on average, achieve one to four grade levels lower than their peers with normal hearing unless appropriate management occurs. 3. The bell curve is an instrument that classifies the intellectual abilities of students. How does a bell curve help a teacher determine the intellectual level of a student? What is the average range? (4pts) On the bell curve, the Mean is in the middle, at the 50th percentile. The average or Mean score on most tests is 100 (Mean = 100). Most test-scoring systems have a Mean of 100 and a Standard Deviation of ±15. Scores between 85 and 115 capture the middle two- thirds of the children tested. 4. When promoting literacy awareness, parents and teachers should (1 pt.) a. Offer little to no attention to books or environmental print b. Give a few experiences for children to practice vocabulary c. Read to them regularly and talk about the story d. Have a child practice writing with no instruction
5. What is the role of the speech-language pathologist? (1 pt.) a. To work with individual children in isolation b. To work with individual children in a room with a general education teacher c. To work with individual children in a small group of non-disabled peers d. To work with individual children on specific speech difficulties 6. Spoken statements to guide the child’s response are (1 pt.) a. Gestural prompts b. Pictorial prompts c. Physical prompts d. Verbal prompts 7. Why is it important for young children to explore a theme in all aspects of their day? (2 pts) I think theme-based learning is so much fun for children! They learn about meaningful and relevant topics to their lives. This creates what is known as intrinsic motivation, in other words, children learn because they want to learn, not because they have to learn. 8. If a child has a language disorder, it may impact the social development of that child. In what ways could it impact the child? (2 pts) Children with language disorders perform at a poor or insufficient academic level because they struggle with reading, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, avoid attending school, and have difficulty with tests. They also have difficulty understanding social cues and often show poor judgment. 9. Describe three ways that learning activities can have opportunities embedded in routine- based instruction. (3 pts.) Three ways that learning activities can have opportunities embedded in routine-based instruction: Introduction of Challenges: Introduce challenges within routine tasks to encourage problem-solving. For instance, if students are used to solving math problems at a basic level, incorporate more real-life scenarios to stimulate critical thinking. Differentiation: Recognize and accommodate diverse learning needs within routine tasks. Tailor activities to different skill levels or provide additional resources for those who need extra support.
Project-Based Learning: Incorporate routine-based instruction with project-based learning. Instead of isolated tasks, assign projects that require the application of knowledge and skills. This approach helps with creativity, collaboration, and comprehension of the subject matter. 10. We debated the benefits of a Cochlear implant for a child who is Deaf. Why are the folks in the Deaf community opposed to using a Cochlear implant? (2 points) The Deaf community is opposed to using a Cochlear implant because they think that deafness is a cultural identity that should be celebrated and respected. For them, the use of a Cochlear implant implies that deafness is a medical condition that needs to be cured. 11. List three things you learned or were reinforced in this class that surprised you or reconfirmed what you knew. Or a combination. (2 pts.) Three things that I learned were: The Deaf community and their opinion on the Cochlear Implant How to understand and use a Bell Curve The importance of play in emotional development 12. Why is it important to involve families when working with young children? (2 pts) A strong family involvement promotes children's healthy development and wellness, including social-emotional and behavioral development; preparing children for school; and transitioning them to kindergarten. 13. How do an FBA (Functional Behavior Assessment) and an ABC (antecedent–behavior– consequence) help develop interventions and change behavior in primary-aged students? (3 points) An FBA tries to figure out what's behind behavior challenges. Whether kids know it or not, they act in certain ways for a reason. If schools and families know what's causing a behavior, they can find ways to change it. The ABC model of behavior can be used by teachers to improve their understanding of what triggers certain behaviors and to develop effective responses and support plans.
