PSY 211 Module Three Activity Template In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe a specific behavior that you learned in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? An external stimulus that has affected my behavior was loud noises like yelling. My mom used to yell all the time growing up. It wasn’t always negative when she yelled. She would yell when I was in trouble, and she would yell if she needed help. Now anytime I hear yelling I get startled. I find that I’m easily started now. I also need multiple noises to help me focus. For example, when doing homework ill have the tv going with headphones on listening to music or a YouTube video while I work. I operate on noises. Watson theory of classical conditioning states stimulus that initially had no effect on the individual comes to elicit a response through its association with a stimulus that already elicits the response. Explain whether the conditioned behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? I never realized that noises affected me so much. It can be negative. I never realize that I needed noises influenced me. My daughter always yells when she talks, and it always startles me. She doesn’t realize and just gets louder it sometimes will overstimulate me. But on the other hand, I can’t sleep without sounds I can’t work without sounds. One step I did take was talking to a therapist. Describe a specific behavior that you changed in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? When I was younger my older brother had told me that Santa was not real. In order to prove his point, he showed me the gifts in our Nanas room that said they were from Santa. We then opened the gifts and rewrapped them. We did not rewrap them that great because my mom found out. Instead of yelling or spanking us. She “took” away our gifts. What she really did was take them to my aunt’s house. We got our gifts there, but we had thought she took them back. We only had clothes under the tree that we opened Christmas day, Explain whether the change in behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? 1
o If negative, and if it is something that you would like to change again, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? This was a positive change. I learnt a couple lessons. I learnt to never go through people things and to not be sneaky. I learned that it’s better to just wait. By going through the gifts, I took away my mom trust. I continue to remember this lesson. I don’t go along with other people’s plans just to do so. I don’t go through people’s things. Explain why one of the behaviors described above is an example of classical conditioning (Watson), operant conditioning (Skinner), or neither of these. Address the following in your response: o If one of the above types of conditioning applies to your example, which specific features helped you to identify it? o Explain why this type of conditioning is most effective in learning or changing this behavior. o If neither type of conditioning applies to the behavior, why is this the case? Explain your response in terms of specific conditioning features (e.g., stimulus, response, association) or inherent aspects of the behavior itself. My example of opening my Christmas presents as a kid is an example of Skinners operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is where a learner’s behavior becomes either more or less probable depending on the consequences it produces. A negative reinforcement was use by my mom pretending to take away our toys. Even though the punishment was negative (by skinners theory) a pleasant stimulus occurred. By doing this she taught me and my brother a lesson and we never did anything like that again. Sigelman, C. K., & Rider, E. A. (2022). Life-span: Human development . Cengage Learning. 2
