The material this week was very dense and covered a lot of ground that is emotionally, politically, and spiritually charged for most people. As I read through the material in the book and listened to the multiple videos we had, I was inundated with several ideas, not to mention the information I gleaned from research outside our course material. One of the first things that interested me was the concept of heterosexism. This was a term that I was previously unaware of. It struck me as similar to the white identity theory we discussed earlier in the course and how those involved in it often cannot see it as if it is invisible. It was interesting to consider how heterosexism is internalized, invisible, and institutionalized and causes physical and mental stress on those in the LGBTQ+ community (Hays & Erford, 2023). Another significant the authors discussed was affectional orientation as opposed to gender identity or sexual attraction. I like the way the text discussed how this term broadened the discussion regarding attraction beyond just sexual attraction. Another key concept for me was the relationship gender has when it intersects with education, race, ethnic background, religion, and the diversity that must be addressed in counseling as a result. As they said in one of the videos, it's addressing that sexual feelings are not the core of your identity and not the whole focus of counseling a person with gendered identity issues ( The Lesbian & Gay Population ). I liked the model that Mark Yarhouse used, talking about the person-centered model instead of the gender-affirming one. The person-centered model places the person and their values as the center of the discussion ( Sexual Identity in Professional Counseling Practice ). It allows for autonomy and fidelity in the counseling relationship. I like the phrase he said he borrowed from others in relationship to the church, which has gone from behaving, believing, and belonging to belonging, believing, becoming. This shift helps us to understand how love covers a multitude of sins and allows for engagement with every person. It was surprising to me that over 75% of those in the LGBTQ+ community participate in a traditional faith practice, either Protestantism Catholicism, born again Christian or the like. The article Best Practice in Religious Cross-cultural Counseling lists seven cultural competency skills for engaging clients with gender identity issues (Suprina et al., 2019). These give a good road map for anyone working with this population. These skills included counselor self-awareness, a robust biopsychosocial assessment, attentiveness to counseling principles, using appropriate interventions, upholding ethical standards, and d, doing no harm. The last aspect was addressing conflicting values, which is, I believe, at the heart of gender identity issues. References:
