9.10 Free Response Question For your consideration: Read through the 9.10 lesson carefully. The FRQ is ⅓ of your overall AP Psychology exam grade. It can be the difference between a 2 and a 5 on the exam. For the FRQ you will choose between 2 prompts. We highly recommend you time yourself at 50 minutes and you do a practice run of both prompts so you can practice the timing and stamina of the AP exam. Once you have completed both prompts, pick one to revise, type, and submit for grading to 9.10. Directions: It is not enough to answer a question by merely listing facts. You should present a cogent argument based on your critical analysis of the question posed, using appropriate psychological terminology. Review the rubric on the last page of the lesson to see how your assignment will be graded. Start with a handwritten timed draft. Do not use notes. Give yourself 25 minutes to write your FRQ. Take out your notes and check over your answers. Revise any mistakes. You should have SEVEN distinct paragraphs with a space between each, one for each task. If identifying a key term, that term should be underlined the first time you use it. Type your final draft. Copy and paste your answers only to the comments of the 9.10 assignment in your assessments list. Feel free to include a picture of your handwritten draft as an uploaded file. Prompt 1: Phillip has been preparing to give the valedictorian speech at his high school since mid-February. He has a fear of public speaking that began in elementary school when he forgot a speech when he was running for student council president. He has been working with the drama teacher at the school to overcome this fear. As graduation approaches, he has started to have difficulty sleeping and has lost his appetite. He has worked hard to earn the opportunity and does think his message of finding his way as a child of immigrants and divorce is important. Still he is beginning to question whether or not he will be able to present the speech in front of such a large crowd. He has spoken to his guidance counselor about his concerns. Explain how each of the following concepts relates to the scenario: Phobia Sympathetic nervous system Intrinsic motivation Positive reinforcement Extraversion Altruism Elaborative rehearsal
Prompt 2: Dr. Bradshaw conducted a study to determine how well kids can multi-task while listening to music. She has set out to prove that a quiet learning environment is better for elementary classrooms. To determine how well kids can multi-task, she required two groups of randomly selected third graders to perform ten sorting tasks with and without music. The eight students were randomly assigned to a group. She measured task accuracy. Assume all differences are significant. The results are as follows: Part A- Identify each of the following in the study: Independent variable Dependent variable Part B Calculate the mean for each condition of the experiment. Draw a graph showing the relationship between music and accuracy. Graph the mean for each condition rather than the individual scores. Explain whether or not the researcher's hypothesis was supported. Explain whether or not the study is ethical. Identify one confounding variable that might have contributed to the result in this study. The independent variable of an experiment is the variable that the experimenter purposefully changes. In this experiment, the independent variable is whether music is playing while the students work. The dependent variable is the variable that changes as a result of the independent variable and that the experimenter is measuring. In this experiment, the dependent variable is how many tasks the students performed correctly. The mean refers to the average of the values collected within a group of an experiment. For the group of students who completed the tasks with music on, the mean accuracy is 8.75 out of 10 correct. For the group with no music, the mean accuracy is 6.5 correct out of 10 tasks.
The researcher’s hypothesis was not supported by the results of the experiment. She wanted to prove that a quiet environment is better for students to learn. However, the data shows that student performed better when music was playing in the background. This study is considered ethical because it follows the APA ethical guidelines. It does not cause any harm or violate consent or confidentiality rules. In addition, the experiment does not use deception. A confounding variable is any factor that the experimenter does not control and has an affect on the outcome of the data. One confounding variable in this experiment would be each student’s IQ.
