In educational research, just like in any research study, ensuring the reliability and validity of tests used is
crucial for generating credible and meaningful results. Researchers use various methods to establish the
reliability and validity of their tests to ensure that their results are accurate and trustworthy. This paper
aims to examine six different reported studies that include information on the reliability and validity of
the tests used during their research. The chosen studies cover manifold aspects of education, ranging from
instructional practices, cooperative classrooms and personality assessment models to the impact of
emotional intelligence on academic performance and perceived stress. On top of discussing the methods
used to support their reliability and the type of validity addressed using specific tests and methodological
procedures, the paper will also identify similarities and differences in the ways that each researcher tries
to support their completed work. In the end, while assessing whether any gaps exist in substantiating the
significance of the overall research, the paper will explore how ethical considerations were addressed by
the authors in their respective studies.
Methods Used to Support Reliability and Establish Validity
Reliability refers to the consistency and stability of measurements. It ensures that if a study were to be
repeated under similar conditions, it would yield similar results. On the other end, Validity refers to the
extent to which a test measures what it is intended to measure. It is about the accuracy and
meaningfulness of the inferences drawn from the data. Overall, the studies chosen for this paper used
different methods to support and establish the reliability and validity of their research. For instance, Pons
and Reyes (2021) explore the reliability and factorial validity of responsible talk and its impact on
cooperative classrooms using a mixed-methods approach. They use confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to
test the factorial validity of their instrument. Charalambous et al. (2017) explore the reliability of generic
and content-specific instructional aspects in physical education lessons using a quantitative approach. To
assess the internal consistency reliability of their instrument, they employ Cronbach's alpha coefficient.
This statistical measure quantifies the degree of interrelatedness among a set of items within a scale. In
this case, it helps ensure that the items assessing instructional aspects in physical education lessons
