2 Trauma and Ministry Discussion The lives of individuals impacted by a calamity are abruptly plunged into a chasm of loss, grief, and terror. It will be crucial to be there for the people experiencing such a significant loss as a crisis counselor summoned to assist in the aftermath of an event as tragic as a hurricane. While a crisis intervention counselor can start helping those affected by the tragedy in several ways, arguably, the most excellent way to do so is to be there as the physical calm amid the storm (Jonker et al., 2020). The crux of the presence ministry idea is that we can see God in people's deeds rather than in their words. Sometimes, just being there for someone says more than any amount of words ever could. It would be wiser in the early days after a calamity to live out God's Word through deeds rather than talk directly from it. A person's behavior might attest to God's work in their life ( King James Bible , 1979/2017, John 13:35). Kanel (2019) outlines different actions a crisis counselor can advise folks struggling with loss to take when contacting people like the couple in the example. First, it is crucial to talk about the emotions of such a severe loss (Kanel, 2019). In this case, the husband and wife, who have lost everything, probably feel terrified, depressed, and alone. As a crisis counselor, I will encourage them to talk about these emotions with one another so they may realize they are not dealing with this sorrow alone. Another emotion they will probably feel is a lack of control. They will probably feel as though their entire world is crumbling and losing control of their lives. The second suggestion on Kanel's list of actions a crisis counselor can suggest to individuals who need encouragement focuses on this lack of control. Crisis counselors should inspire the persons they work with to exert control where they can (Kanel, 2019). There are aspects of a natural disaster that one cannot control, such as losing one's home, personal goods, and possibly even family members and pets. A crisis counselor can also assist catastrophe
3 victims in regaining control by identifying aspects of their lives that they can control (Jonker et al., 2020). An otherwise overwhelming situation might be made to feel more manageable by doing something as simple as starting to organize insurance information. Although no two people will react to a traumatic event like a natural disaster, in the same way, being present and assisting in keeping order in an otherwise chaotic situation will undoubtedly have a calming effect on everyone.
