Week 3: Person-centered, Existential, & Gestalt Greetings, Class! I am pleased to see how you are using the Discussion Forum to engage and discuss each of the theories and how you are making sense of them. As you may know, it is critical that you have the opportunity to interact with the material, with each other, and with me as the instructor. Our class is stuctured to provide each of these opportunities. Please pay attention to the CAT's and daily comments I post, along with the summary feedback I provide to each of your assignments as this is where you interact with me. While the Discussion forum allows for interaction between class members, I look forward to your responses to the posts I make as well. As we move into week 3, the content will cover alternatives to the classical theories, which include Person-Centered, Existential, and Gestalt approaches. At this point in the reading, you should recognize Freud’s influence in proceeding theories; however, you should also start to identify what stands out that makes the other theories unique. You may also share on the Class Wall, or in response to a classmate in the discussion boards, how you are organizing and documenting the relevant information for each theory. Objectives: Analyze person-centered, existential, and Gestalt therapies in terms of the role of client and counselor, goals of therapy, and types of counseling techniques [CACREP 2.F.5.a] Examine counseling populations for which person-centered, existential, and Gestalt therapies have empirical evidence of their effectiveness. [CACREP F.5.a] Analyze the key concepts reflected in person-centered, existential, and Gestalt therapies that are important in the development of a counselor. [CACREP F.5.a] Reading: See the Path for this week's Chapters and additional readings located in the Study Materials Participation: Each topic has two discussion questions that must be answered with a minimum of 100-200 words. Some questions require supporting your discussion points with peer- reviewed/scholarly sources; this is actually a very good habit to establish now with each question in every topic. You must answer both questions and respond to classmates’ posts on three separate days to receive full points for attendance and participation. This is a GCU Policy outlined in the University Handbook. Your replies should also be substantive in terms of content; simply saying “I agree” or “I find this interesting” does not suffice in terms of furthering clinical discussion.
Tasks: **This is an excellent time to review any feedback given for APA format on the previous writing assignments, and utilize the materials in the GCU Writing Center if you haven’t already. Also, keep in mind GCU has an “Ask a Librarian” feature, which is also available for online students, if you are struggling with research and finding scholarly sources. The primary assignment this week is a case study analysis for the purpose of theory application. The case study analysis consists of five questions that should be addressed in research paper format, which includes a minimum of six scholarly sources. Please review the information in the course materials on APA headings and seriation for correct format. For each of the questions, be sure to support your points with peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. Please use the following link to locate peer-reviewed scholarly sources through the GCU website: https://libguides-gcu-edu.lopes.idm.oclc.org/az.php Here's to a great week! Dr. Wilde
