Within counseling we will be exposed to many different backgrounds through our clients. Not only will we be exposed to the differing backgrounds of cultures, we will experience different perspectives and views on cultures. Though we put a lot of emphasis on understanding the importance of multicultural understanding, the ability to be flexible to the nature of culture in different perspectives. The awareness of this will continue to allow for successful therapeutic relationships. Being an individual that comes from a diverse background, it is very personal for me to be able to ensure that I am always aware of my cultural awareness and sensitivity with clients. What makes California society unique is its vast economy, immigration patterns, among other aspects. This gives a wide range of cultural backgrounds, social experiences, and incomes- to name a few.When looking at how one could become more well rounded in multicultural competency it is important to be able to understand your own cultural background and biases. To be able to reflect within yourself will allow for you to have a clearer stance when you interact with clients. Approaching clients with a sensitivity to their cultural experiences and background, will also give you as a counselor a positive introduction to a healthy and successful therapeutic relationship. Though someone may have a rich cultural background, it is not the place of a counselor to make the assumption that is the view from the clients perspective.
