Three domains of development: Physical development refers to the development of the body, the growth, and changes of the body as well as the senses, health, and well-being as we age and develop from infants to elders. An example of this would be the full development of the body as it grows, however specifically during puberty when the body grows several inches taller, development of genital and the milestones of growth (Spielman, R., et.al. 2020). Cognitive development is the development of memory, creativity, thinking and language as we grow. Examples of this would be when as a young child we learn to talk and form words or when children attempt to understand a situation that is new to them. When my son was little, he thought that girls had 2 butts because he knew that girls didn’t have penises but he also knew they had to sit on the toilet to use the restroom so he had reasoned that they must have 2 butts, one to urinate (Spielman, R., et.al. 2020). Psychosocial development is the social aspect of development. It is the development of personality, emotions, and relationships. This is the development that I feel is subjective to one’s environments, I feel like this varies based on how you were raised. Examples of this development are children forming friendships or watching a movie and crying, feeling anger, or any other emotion (Spielman, R., et.al. 2020). The normative approach is basically the thought that there is a kind of normal developmental guideline that occurs, however because everyone is different and develop differently and you must also consider other variables developmental stages may vary. Normative approach is saying that by such and such an age they should be doing this or that. Every teenager will go
through puberty, however not all will go through it at the exact same age (Mcleod, 1970), (Spielman, R., et.al. 2020). Understanding development is extremely important when practicing nursing, there are many diseases and disorders that can affect development, understanding when a milestone should generally be reached will help us nurses better assist in providing care related to the patient better.
