Student Name: Student Number: Sec琀on Number: 003 PSYC 218 003 Winter 2023 – Lab Assignment 5 Single Sample Hypothesis Tes琀ng INSTRUCTIONS : This assignment focuses on single sample hypothesis tes琀ng (i.e., z test, Student's single sample t test). You should review Chapter 8 of "A Student Guide to SPSS" before trying to complete this assignment. Note that some ques琀ons cannot be answered using SPSS and will require hand calcula琀ons. You are encouraged to use the equa琀on editor of your word processing program to show your work for any hand calcula琀ons. If your word processing program lacks an equa琀on editor, you may write out your work on a piece of paper, take a photo of the work, and embed that photo into your assignment. Work that cannot be easily deciphered will not be marked. Use the SPSS 昀le ‘Assignment 5 Data.sav’ to complete the assignment. The SPSS 昀le contains data from three CogLab experiments your class has completed (i.e., Memory Span, Change Detec琀on, False Memory). The data in the SPSS 昀le represent a subset of par琀cipants who completed each CogLab. If you did not complete the CogLab "False Memory" on 琀me, you will lose 1/4 of the total assignment grade (5.5 points). To avoid receiving other deduc琀ons, type your answers in the spaces provided. You may insert addi琀onal spaces a昀er any ques琀on as needed. In addi琀on, use proper symbols and nota琀on (e.g., , , t , , , z ) in all your answers. Unless otherwise speci昀ed, the results of all sta琀s琀cal tests, including p -values, should be reported in APA style. Follow the exact guidelines in your Cu琀ler SPSS guide (see (“Repor琀ng the results”) for more details). You will lose marks for each failure to follow these direc琀ons. This lab assignment is due on March 31 . You must submit your assignment to Canvas. Do not email your assignment. You will lose 1/8 of the total assignment grade (3.25 points) for each day it is late. An assignment will be considered one day late as soon as the deadline passes. 1. According to the Change Detec琀on CogLab global data – which are based on a popula琀on of 83858 par琀cipants - the mean propor琀on of correct responses on trials that contain a 昀icker is 0.7250. Use the appropriate sta琀s琀c to evaluate the hypothesis that the mean propor琀on of correct responses on 昀icker trials in our class is lower than the mean propor琀on in the popula琀on. Use an alpha level of .05, 1-tailed. [8 points] a. State the null and alterna琀ve hypotheses, (2 point) H 0 = The mean propor琀on of correct responses on 昀icker trials in our class is not lower than the mean propor琀on in the popula琀on. H A =The mean propor琀on of correct responses on 昀icker trials in our class is lower than mean propor琀on in the popula琀on b. Report the results, using APA style. (Con昀dence intervals and e昀ect size es琀mates are not required as part of your APA-style reports for this assignment). (2 points) t(48)=-3.203 t crit =-1.67 Professor KRYKLYWY 2022 Page 1 of 3 Downloaded by Damon Wong (damonwong7@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|11252536

Based on your answer to part c, state whether you should reject or retain H 0 and provide a conclusion. (1 point) p=0.001 is less than =0.05 I will reject the null hypothesis because the mean propor琀on of correct responses on 昀icker trials in our class is not lower than the mean propor琀on in the popula琀on and our t obt(-3.20) is greater than t crit(-1.67) d. Calculate, report, and provide a precise interpreta琀on of the e昀ect size es琀mate, d . Show any equa琀ons and all steps in your answer. (3 points) Sample mean d=0.46 standard devia琀on lower than the popula琀on mean 2. According to the Memory Span CogLab global data – which are based on a popula琀on of 69242 par琀cipants – the mean number of digits recalled is 6.705. [9 points] a. Assume you do not know the popula琀on standard devia琀on. Use the appropriate sta琀s琀c to evaluate the hypothesis that mean number of digits recalled in our class is higher than the mean number of digits recalled in the popula琀on. Use an alpha level of .05, 1-tailed. i. Report the results, using APA style. (Con昀dence intervals and e昀ect size es琀mates are not required as part of your APA-style reports for this assignment). Student Name: Student Number: Sec琀on Number: 003 PSYC 218 003 Winter 2023 – Lab Assignment 5 Single Sample Hypothesis Tes琀ng M=7.00 In one tailed single sample t test the mean number of digits recalled in the sample is not signi昀cantly di昀erent than the mean number of digits recalled in popula琀on. ii. Based on your answer to part a-i, state whether you should reject or retain H 0 and provide a conclusion. (1 point) p=0.07 is greater than =0.05 I will retain the null hypothesis because the mean number of digits recall in our class is higher than the mean number of digits recalled in popula琀on. b. Now assume that you do know the popula琀on standard devia琀on, which is 1.570. Use the most appropriate sta琀s琀c to evaluate the hypothesis that the mean number of digits recalled in our class is higher than the mean number of digits recalled in the popula琀on. Use an alpha level of .05, 1-tailed. i. Report the results (APA style is not required here). Provide the relevant p -value. Show any equa琀ons and all steps in your answer. (3 points) Mean number digits recalled in the sample is not signi昀cally di昀erent than the mean number of digits recall in the popula琀on’s z obt =1.32 z crit =1.65 p=0.09 ii. Based on your answer to part b-i, state whether you should reject or retain H 0 and provide a conclusion. (1 point) z obt is less than z crit I will retain H0 that the mean number of digits in our class is not higher than the mean number of digits recalled in the population. c. Compare your answers to part a-ii and part b-ii. Describe any similari琀es or di昀erences you no琀ce in your answers. What does the result of the comparison demonstrate about the rela琀ve power, generally speaking, of the two tests you conducted? Explain. (2 points) z-test had higher p-value which means that this test has lower power than the t-test. 3. In the False Memory CogLab, you saw a list of words (e.g., "bed," "drowsy," "琀red," "dream") in a study phase. During the subsequent test phase you were shown words and were asked to indicate Professor KRYKLYWY 2022 Page 3 of 3 Downloaded by Damon Wong (damonwong7@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|11252536

The test phase lists contained three types of words. Some were old/original words that were shown in the study phase (e.g., "bed"); others were new words that were unrelated to words that were shown in the study phase (e.g., "cup"); and others were lure words that were related to words shown in the study phase but that were not presented (e.g., "sleep"). Answer the following ques琀ons. [9 points] a. According to the False Memory global data , the mean percentage of original list items recognized is 79.616. Use the appropriate sta琀s琀c to evaluate the hypothesis that the mean percent of recognized original list items in our class sample is di昀erent than the mean percent of recognized original list items in the popula琀on. Use an alpha level of .05, 2-tailed. i. State the null and alterna琀ve hypotheses (2 point) H 0 = The mean percent of recognized original list items in or class sample is not di昀erent than the mean percent of recognized original list items in the popula琀on Ha=The mean percent of recognized original list items in or class sample is not di昀erent than the mean percent of recognized original list items in the popula琀on ii. Based on our results t(48)=-2.31 t crit =2.01 p= 0.03 M=76.14 s=10.53 iii. Based on your answer to part a-iii, state your decision with respect to H 0 and provide a conclusion. (1 point) We will retain our null hypothesis that the mean percent of recognized original list items in our class sample is not di昀erent than the mean percent of recognized original list items in the popula琀on.Our t obt =-2.31 is less than our t crit =2.01, and p value is lower than alpha level. b.
