RESEARCH WRITING STYLE 2 In this assignment, we will explore various aspects of APA style formatting and referencing. We will discuss the purpose of using various levels of headings, proper formatting for personal communications, the significance of a DOI, and where to find information on formatting diverse types of citations and references in the APA publication Manual. Additionally, we will examine the various features available in the Jerry Falwell Library that can aid students in their research. One of the APA Requirement Examples is the purpose and formatting of various levels of Headings. The purpose of using various levels of headings in a property formatted document is to provide a clear and organized structure to the content. This allows readers to easily navigate and comprehend the information presented. The APA Publication Manual provides guidelines for various levels of headings on page 47. For example, a level three heading requires bold font and sentence-style capitalization. Another APA requirement example is formatting a Personal Communication. Instructions for formatting personal communication can be found in the APA Publication Manual on Page 179-180. Personal communication refers to any of the information obtained directly from an individual, such as a conversation or email. In-text citations for personal communications should include the name of the person and the date of the communication. For example, if I had a conversation with John Smith on August 15, 2021, my in-text citation would be: (J. Smith, personal communication, August 15, 2021). Personal communications are not included in the reference list because they are not retrievable by others. Another APA requirement example is the significance of a DOI. The DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. It is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to a digital object, such as an article or book, to provide a persistent link to its location on the internet. The letters DOI
RESEARCH WRITING STYLE 3 stand for “Digital Object Identifier.” It is important for researchers because it ensures that the source can be easily located and accessed even if the URL changes over time. The DOI also helps in providing accuracy and references for the source. Another APA requirement example is formatting items and examples from various sources. Instructions for formatting citations and references for various sources can be found in the APA Publication Manual. The page numbers are as follows: Your introduction to Research textbook: Reference (p. 204-205), In-text citation (p. 178), Example of reference: Lastname, F. M. (Year). Title of book. Publisher., Example of in-text citation: (Lastname, Year) A recorder webinar: Reference (p. 350), In-text citation (p. 269), Example of reference: Lastname, F.M. (Year, Month, Day). Title of webinar [Video file]. Retrieved from URL, Example of in-text citation: (Lastname, Year) The APA Publication Manual itself: Reference (p. 327), In-text citation (p. 259), Example of reference: American Psychological Association (7 th ed.). Publisher., Example of in-text citation: (AuthorLastName, Year) Library Resources is another APA Requirement. The Jerry Farewell Library provides various features to assist students in their research aside from books, journals, and databases. Some of these features include Interlibrary Loan (ILL). This feature allows students to borrow materials from other libraries that are not available in Jerry Falwell Library, It provides access to a wide range of resources and materials that may be needed for research purposes. Research Guides: The library offers research guides on various subjects and topics, which provide valuable information, tips, and resources specific to those areas of study. These guides can help students navigate the research process and relevant sources. Citation Management Tools: The library provides access to citation management tools like Zotero and EndNote, which assist students in organizing and formatting references according to APA style guidelines. These tools can save
