Campaign Communication POLI 4028 Gender & Politics Due: October 27, 2018 via Moodle by end of day. For this assignment you will evaluate candidate communication from a woman running for the House, Senate, or a gubernatorial seat in the general election in 2022 . You can choose your candidate but please make sure they are running for a US House, US Senate, or gubernatorial seat in the general election. If you want to run your candidate by me, you can shoot me an email. You are going to analyze how your candidate manages gender stereotypes, both feminine and masculine, through their campaign websites. You will also look up the candidate’s opponent, and do a comparative analysis of the opponent’s website. You will evaluate the communication for several key characteristics. 1. Does the candidate emphasize feminine traits, roles, issues, or behaviors? If so, how? Remember, you can analyze the visuals, the text, and any information provided in the communication. 2. Does the candidate emphasize masculine traits, roles, issues, or behaviors? If so, how? Remember, you can analyze the visuals, the text, and any information provided in the communication. 3. Do you find evidence that the candidate is engaging in trait-balancing? Or is the candidate emphasizing one set of stereotypes over another? Does this strategy match the gendered expectations of the office they are running for? 4. If your candidate has an intersectional identity, how does this intersectional identity emerge in their use of gender stereotypes? 5. Find the candidate’s opponent, it might be a woman or a man. Compare how the opponent uses feminine and masculine stereotypes on their campaign website. How might the opponent’s gender affect the way they use stereotypic traits? 6. Assess which candidate does the better job of managing gender stereotypes based on what you have read in the research for this class. Below is the rubric for grading. Remember, you must hit on all 6 items above, but how you organize your essay is up to you.
