: In which phase of a presidential election – the nomination phase or the general election phase – do you think candidate’s campaigns can have bigger effects on the outcome? Why In class we established that the two stages of the campaign differ in their stability. The nomination stage usually sees more of volatile environment whereas the general election focuses largely on keeping voters loyal and attempting to garner swing votes. In the nomination stage, it is virtually anyone’s game. Candidates struggle with finding funding, gaining partisan support, and overall organizing their campaign. When the general election comes into play, the fundamentals model and other means of prediction can help campaigns learn where their focus must go. However, these methods only give you a feel of how things will go once the race has already started. Based on information presented, certain “big name” events during the elections don’t really have that much of an effect on how people will behave. This would point toward the nomination phase having is slightly better influence on outcome in terms of the election results. At this stage, people are not acclimated with a candidate’s policies, team, or even where they stand. The public also learns where their respective party or the lack thereof stands. In the Vox article we read regarding door to door canvasing close to the general election, we learned that voters tend to not budge at that point. There’s not much convincing you can do at that point unless some major development occurs. Voters need time to get to know a candidate and starting earlier seems to be the best means for this to happen. When speaking about debates, press conferences, and tours etc. we see a high turnout/viewership, but a small effect on how people end up voting. The campaigning stage in general serves to acclimate people to a candidate. Campaigning in the
stage closest to the general election seems as though it has less of an impact when constituents already are aware of the issues at hand.
