Electricity, Magnetism, and Light Compare/Contrast Paper Jake Brumond Rasmussen University Understanding Ourselves Through Physics Professor Anderson 5/28/2023
During this paper I will identify the physics principles contained within the scenario in the project about Mandy’s trip to Rome. I will also connect these principles to electricity, magnetism, or light in modern physics. I will also talk about James Clerk Maxwell and give an example of these concepts in my life. I will be discussing the physics principles contained within the scenario about Mandy’s trip to Rome. I believe during this scenario there are two different principles in play, one being theory of electromagnetism and the other being energy conversion, transfer and conservation. I will talk about the Law of Energy Conversion first which is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form to another. I believe this principle is shown in the scenario when Mandy uses a USB adapter port where it’s universal in providing 5 volts of power in any country. This shows that it was transformed from one form to another to be able to power Mandy’s phone. The next one is the theory of electromagnetism which establishes the basic principle of electrical and electronic circuits over the entire frequency spectrum from dc to optics. I believe this is shown in the scenario when Mandy is talking about next time, she travels she will bring a portable charger that is powered by solar power because solar power is defined as electromagnetic radiation that occurs as waves. I will be giving an example of James Clerk Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism that I use in everyday life. For my current job I have to do a lot of data transfers for people to new
computers constantly having to uses hard drives to transfer the information from computer to computer, hard drives would not have been created without Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism, because an electromagnet in the read/write head writes information to the disk by magnetizing small sections of the disk. I can relate this back to the Mandy scenario because the theory of electromagnetism is also used when Mandy talks about next time using a solar powered portable charger the next time, she travels so she does not have to partake in the energy made by burning fossil fuels. Another thing from my life that we would not have if we did not have the research from Maxwell is an electric fan, I have to use this everyday in my office because they currently refuse to fix the air conditioning and without it, it would be over 90 degrees in my office at all times. In conclusion, the scenario contained multiple different physics principles such as the law of energy conversion and the theory of electromagnetism. As well as James Clerk Maxwell has made a huge impact on today’s world with his research into electromagnetism where we would not have any hard drives, or electric fans that I use in everyday life. As well as how Mandy wants to use solar powered portable charger this would not be possible without electromagnetism.
