KNES 423 Adapted Physical Education Classroom Environment Philosophy Write your philosophy for meeting the needs of all students taking into account the various aspects of a physical education program, from the time your students enter the class to the time they leave, as well as the lasting impact it will have on them. What will are the things you will do to make your program inclusive, accessible, and safe for everyone. This written assignment should include, but is not limited to: instruction, physical space, activities, language, culture, and more Over the last two years majoring in “Physical Education Teacher Education” at Towson University has taught me many strategies to ensure I include every student in my future classroom. With great mentorship and guidance, I have taken my learned skills, knowledge and understanding and created the following environmental educational philosophy. To begin my teaching philosophy is to create a safe, joyful, and supportive classroom so schools’ can be an inclusive place for everyone to learn. I believe the first step to include every student in my future classroom is to learn the community culture I plan to teach in. Once I get hired my plan is to research the community culture, languages, and economic overall percentage. I want to ensure when writing my lessons, I include every language my students will speak, while creating rules for dressing in physical education every student have accessibility to properly prepare, all while learning who my students are. I am confident with this start students will see my willingness to not only teach them but to understand they all are not the same and I am willing to learn all of them. To learn the community, I will start at recreation centers if there is any in the area. At the recreation center I may ask the workers questions about the community children and maybe even volunteer to help gain more understanding. If no recreations exist in the community due to low funding, I will survey other teachers’
classes such as but not limited to Art, Music, Science etc. When writing my lesson plans, I will include modifications, so every student is able to participate. I am aware all schools do not have the money to hire paraprofessionals for students to be successful. My lessons modifications will include making the playing area vary in sizes to help create a better learning environment for students that need smaller or larger space. Additionally, my modifications will include proximity for students who needs that constant eye contact or touched on the shoulder to stay focus. I will use the buddy system strategy; this will help enhance students’ social skills while giving me the opportunity to focus on the entire class. When giving instructions I will repeat them three different times but in different forms. The first time I will just speak the instructions, the second time I will have a student repeat the instructions out loud and lastly, I will repeat the instructions again with students demonstrating as I speak. Students will have the opportunity to choose between what equipment they want to use with each activity. During my internships I have learned some students struggle with texture of materials, some lack fine motor skills, others may have cognitive impairment and cannot use equipment properly. My goal is to include every student and not make them feel excluded so I will have the entire class vary in equipment at times, so they can see others using the same equipment as them. My activities instructions will always be placed on the wall daily and I will constantly walk around the gymnasium to each group or student during activities. At the end of some class periods, I will do class activity surveys to see what my students want to learn and what activities they favor to promote student centered learning. My goal is to create a joyful, safe, and supportive educational environment for every student. With my goal in mind students will complete weekly journals describing how they felt during the class periods that week, what went well, what they think did not go well and tell me what they think I can do to help them be successful in class. Journals can be completed by using whatever application, tool, or device the student feel comfortable with as long as they complete the homework. I am certain once students leave my classroom, they will understand they should be included in the world and if they ever feel like are not being included, they will have the knowledge and confidence on how to be vocal for themselves or seek resources to help them. The word “inclusion” will remain big and bold on my gymnasium wall at all times.
