Business Ethics Unit IV Journal I do believe businesses should be required to do their part to protect their environment. Companies can begin with small approaches or goals and move towards larger ones as they grow as a company. An example I came up with from a company I once worked for is that they provided filtered waters for employees. They had a contract with a company that delivered 5- gallon jugs of water that were reusable. The company would pick up the water jugs when empty and deliver more. This kept the employees from having to use water bottles and having to dispose of all the plastic. While researching this topic I came across an article that lists 8 ways companies can do their part in helping save the environment. 1. Provide filtered water. 2. Reduce paper waste. 3. Switch to LED lights. 4. Allow telecommuting. 5. Improve air quality with indoor plants. 6. Power off computers. 7. Set up recycling bins in common areas. 8. Reduce travel. (Hendricks, 2018) One example of potential impacts on the environment locally is when people begin cutting down trees and clearing forest it forces wildlife to lose their homes and they have nowhere to go. The wildlife then begins to migrate into neighborhoods and cities which causes the animals to be in danger. “Forest create fresh oxygen, save wildlife animals, and play a significant role in managing temperature and balancing the eco system.” (Howell, 2020) An example that I can give of the potential impacts on a global level is climate change. “Two significant factors influence change in the climate. The first one being the natural processes such as volcanic eruption, suns radiation, and another is the result of human activities such as overpopulation, pollution, etc. (Howell, 2020)
People should educate themselves on what actions they can take to help with environmental issues. Starting somewhere is always better than starting nowhere. Any action that is taken to help with environmental issues by just one person can really go a long way. Just think, if everyone just chose to recycle think about how that would be so much less plastic in the country’s landfills. In my home we choose to recycle. We have a city recycle bin and the city comes weekly to empty the bin. This is just one small step we have chosen to take in taking part of helping our environment. We as a family also do not liter in our community or anywhere else, we go for that matter. When we go to the beach, and we see trash on the beach, we even help clean up the areas that we encounter. We also chose to use reusable bottles for our water consumption. We have a filter in our refrigerator, and you really cannot tell the difference in the taste of the water or at least I can’t. If everyone just starts out small, it can become a trickling effect and hopefully others will want to follow our lead. I chose to educate myself and learn what I can do as a single person to help with environmental concerns within my community and communities I may visit. It is up to us as humans to take pride in our Earth and be proud of it.
