Walmart’s Code of Ethics
“A code of ethics sets out an organization’s ethical guidelines and best practices to follow
for honesty, integrity, and professionalism.” (Hayes, 2021) Not obeying a company’s code of ethics can cause problems for you within your work environment, even leading up to termination
from the company.
Walmart’s Code of Ethics is as follows:
“Not tolerating discrimination or harassment, promoting health and safety, and selling safe food and products. Building trust with our business. Competing fairly, combating bribery and corruption, using data and technology respectfully and ethically, and sourcing responsibility.” (Ethics & Compliance, N.D.)
What are some of the main points of the code of ethics?
Not tolerating discrimination and harassment, they promote safety not only for their workers but also consumers. I feel that employees should not have to deal with discrimination or harassment in any given situation. Harassment comes in many forms, sexual, verbal, and physical abuse to name a few.
What is particular striking, or what stands out about the code of ethics? Something that caught my attention is they stated that their goal is to treat people fairly, not tolerating discrimination or harassment. I don’t think anyone should have to be in an environment where they feel uncomfortable, harassed, or even have the feeling of a hostile work environment.
How
does the code of ethics aim to protect the consumer?
The company states in their code of ethics that selling safe food and products to their consumers is one of their priorities. The company also states that they will compete fairly.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the code of ethics?
Weakness: The company states that they do not discriminate, however Wal-Mart was involved “in a sexual discrimination lawsuit, the largest class action suit of its kind in U.S. history. Filed in 2000, the suit alleged that Wal-Mart discriminated against women in promotion, pay, and job assignments decisions in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” (Columbia Southern University, 2023) Strength: I think that overall, they do have competitive prices that go inline with their competing companies. I have seen that products of the same can be lower and occasionally I have seen them higher at other places of business. Could the code of ethics be improved upon? If so, how?
I think that the code of ethics is written well if it is followed correctly. I think constant training for all employees and reinstating the importance of the code of ethics would be very beneficial. I also feel the ones who do not follow the code of ethics properly should be held accountable for their actions and wrong doings. If they had a refresher class once a year to make awareness of the importance of the code of ethics that would be a way for the employees to be reminded of just how important these things are within the company. Training with a company should be ongoing throughout someone’s career not just classes that are taught during orientation. I currently work for a company that we have annual training on particular topics and we have a deadline to complete these classes if it something that is taken online with the
