I like this chapter, especially how they started the chapter with the story of Scrooge. I strongly agree with the concept that making amends consists of apology, changed behavior, restitution, and generosity. Just like in RJ processes, meditation, circles, and conferencing play a significant role. (Ness & Strong, 2015) With apology, there are three elements (Acknowledgment, affect and vulnerability). Acknowledgment is when the person apologizing is taking responsibility for the violation. The effect is the regret that is expressed by
words or expressions. Vulnerability is when the offender shames themselves by asking for forgiveness or the victims to accept their apology. With changed behavior, there are three strategies to complete this process. The three strategies are changing the environment, learning new behaviors, and rewarding positive change. Changing the environment by the offender agreeing to stay away from a certain place. Learning new behaviors by the offender taking drug treatment classes. Rewarding positive change by offender receiving positive reinforcement of them following the agreement at a follow up meeting. Restitution is when the offender either returns or replaces the victims' property. This still may have to be managed by the courts. With generosity, is when the offender pays debt to the community. This is the offender making amends with the community. What surprised me in this chapter is that restitution is the most complicated element. When it comes to restitution, there are so many questions that must be answered before the amount can be set. Therefore, it is possible that it must be managed in court. Questions like: How much restitution is enough? Who should receive it? What if the offender does not have the resources to pay the victims? Should all the victims in each of the circles be included in the criminal sanction of
restitution? Which injuries should restitution be provided? I believe I may try and use the four elements for making amends the next time I catch me. teenage son lying to me. This may be useful to him and me. I do not believe any child knows how. much a lie hurts a parent. Reference: Van Ness, D. & Strong, K. (2015).
