Running Head: Applying Code of Ethics
1
Applying Code of Ethics
Scenario 1
In this scenario, I think there has been a violation of the code of ethics because of privacy
and confidentiality.
Even though Gail and Louise are referring to their clients with their first name,
they run into an ethic problem with the Code of Ethics.
1.07 Privacy and Confidentiality section I
suggest that “Social workers should not disclose any confidential information unless privacy is
ensured” (NASW, 2017). When they meet at a coffee shop, there is no promise that peers cannot
overhear what the client and the social worker are discussing. I believe Gail and Louise could talk
to their supervisor about how meeting at a local coffee shop is on violation of the Code of Ethics
and ask if they could stay at the office after hours and conduct their peer supervision. If that is not
an option that could always talk to the local church and see if they could conduct their peer
supervision, there.
Scenario 2
The ethic standard that Ralph should refer to is 1.12 Derogatory Language. This section of
the Code of Ethics states “Social workers should not use derogatory language in their written or
verbal communications to or about clients” (Segal, Gerdes, Steiner, 2018). Ralph should have
written Wanda a professional letter terminating her treatment with professional language and
communication. I believe he was right to refer Wanda to a local mental health center and he took
the right steps to make sure she did not go without treatment since he did terminate the services
he was providing.
Scenario 3
2
In this scenario 1.02 Self-Determination should be taken into consideration. This code
states “
Social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist
clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals.
Social workers may limit clients' right to
self-determination when, in the social workers' professional judgment, clients' actions or
potential actions pose a serious, foreseeable, and imminent risk to themselves or others
.
”
(NASW, 2017).
I feel like Linda should continue to provide Mr. Jones with information for
respite care and when Linda feels like Mr. Jones can no longer properly take care of Mrs. Jones
on his own, despite if he continues to refuse to consider other options, she should arrange for
respite care.
While it is the Code of Ethics to let clients make their own decisions it also states if
a social worker feels a clients actions or potential actions pose a serious risk, they can limit those
rights in order to step in and help to reduce those risks (NASW, 2017)
Scenario 4
In this scenario I feel like Juan should refer to 1.07 Privacy and Confidentiality section
V
“Social workers should not disclose identifying information when discussing clients with
consultants unless the client has consented to disclosure of confidential information or there is a
compelling need for such disclosure
”
(NASW, 2017). If Juan informs Karen about Jim being
HIV+ he would be violating his privacy. Since Jim has not disclosed to Juan that he is sexually
active with Karen, then there is no reason to inform her about Jim’s condition. If Jim were to
become sexually active with Karen and he does not disclose the fact he is HIV+ to her, then Juan
should contact the appropriate authorities. Juan can still voice his concern and encourage and
inform Jim of the laws there are when beginning a sexual relationship with someone without
telling them they are HIV+.
