Benedictine Perspectives
I have experienced the Benedictine value of moderation within this course. Moderation is
“to be content with living simply and finding balance in work, prayer, and leisure.” Throughout
my time of being in this course and in a new environment overall, I’ve found many of my own
strengths and weaknesses. Numerous of these are found within the things and people that make
me content as an individual here. Often, I find myself in situations where I must pick what will
make me the happiest, what is the best thing for me to do, to serve my purpose here (earning a
degree), and/or is this the right thing for me to do in this moment. When I fall into unpleasant
paths or circumstances, I often turn to prayer because that’s what makes me feel at peace within
myself and with my surroundings. Personally, I think it is vital to be able to balance school,
social life, and faith all at once because without all three, life starts to feel uneasy and out of
order.
Some assumptions or expectations I had coming into this course were that it’d be more
bible and doctrine based since it is an intro course. Other than that, I have learned a lot so far
about the topics raised in class. Something that piqued my curiosity was how relevant the topics
are. For example, I learned how to analyze biblical text and how it shouldn’t be taken literal. The
extravagant stories from the bible are there so that the readers can discern the problems and how
the people faced them. Many of these stories especially in the Old Testament, were written to
give us a lesson to problems we may face today in modern life. In my senior year of high school,
I took a Social Justice Leadership where we mainly focused on the 7 pillars of Catholic social
teaching. This contributed to my understanding of this experience so far because I now have a
larger perception on how to carry out God’s work and partaking in the common good. My
experience on practicing moderation has enhanced the way I think about my previous classroom
learning because I feel like now that I have grown to be a person with more responsibilities and
accountability, it’s important to be able to do things in moderation and live a balanced and
healthy lifestyle. I feel like before, in my old classroom I did these things but in a more mindless
way because I didn’t have so much on my plate to have to balance.
This learning matters because I believe these things, like moderation, help guide a better,
healthier lifestyle. It is important to live a well-balanced life were keeping and practicing
moderation maintains a positive and trustworthy environment. I can apply this learning to my
own life because this value specifically helps me keep my life in order therefore affects the direct
people around me, and my community. For example, it is important that I socialize and engage
with my close friends, if I don’t than that is when problems and concerns arise. It is as little as
these situations to keep moderation close to you where you can continue living in a healthy
manner but also being content and feel fulfilled with the lifestyle you choose.
