Group Project 2-Individual Reflection
In the discussion, my group discussed and presented about dualism, materialism, and
holism and how each of these philosophical theories would benefit patients in an imaginary
clinic on campus. Each trio presented on these topics. The first group presented about dualism.
They said their focus which was on substance dualism, in which they explained that it was a
position that there are two sorts of substances in the world, the immaterial mind and the physical
body. After that, they presented some of the benefits, such as the prioritization of the patient over
everything, the patient will feel less stressed while going through the treatment, and the patient
having equal treatment opportunities.
The second group talked about materialism, where they would prioritize the body over
everything. Some of the benefits of this way of treatment would be that all of the emotions or
thoughts would be taken out of the equation, they would simplify the treatment, making it easier
for the patient to digest the treatment, and they would use numbers, statistics, or data to keep
track of the treatment and see if it was working properly or if it needed any adjustments. They
would look at all the small parts of the treatment from the big picture to thoroughly treat the
patient.
The third group talked about holism. They explained that it was the pieces that sum up a living
person. Their philosophy was body-mind, meaning that one aspect affects the other aspect and
vice versa, and it could be in a good or bad way. Throughout their treatment, they wanted to
avoid quick fixes at any moment. Their goals while conducting this treatment for the patient
were to bring balance to the individual's life and avoid having the patient on long-term
medication.
I found it interesting how the dualism group talked about how, while conducting their treatment,
they were going to give the patient the option to do or choose if they want to proceed with the
non-physical aspect of the treatment or with the physical aspect of the treatment. I also found it
interesting when one of the board members asked the materialistic group about how a regular
physician check-up would be different using a materialistic aspect, and they said that by focusing
on the physical aspect, they would go straight for that specific issue, the patient is suffering from
and how to treat it, to fix it as quick as possible, they will not look at anything else.
I agree with the board’s decision; they chose Holism as the winner, and I think it was because
they knew how to explain their way of treatment, how they would proceed with the treatment
and their goals. They explained very well how, in holism one aspect of the patient’s life would
affect other aspects; they were evident in general, and they knew how to answer all the questions
that the board asked them in an appropriate way, and in general, they convinced me to take their
way of treatment if I would of have to choose between these three.
