Critical Thinking Template
Scenario:
Aaron and Merida are two students who attend Bryant & Stratton College. Their
instructor asked them to identify three problems that could exist in different
community types: academic, professional, and personal. They were also asked to
brainstorm solutions for each of the problems.
They are now stuck and are unsure which solution is best for each scenario. All are
plausible.
Your job is to review each of the problems and then use critical thinking and
problem-solving tools you have learned to suggest which solution they should
choose.
It would be okay to also include professional examples or experiences in
your explanation, but personal opinions may not provide credibility to your solution
on their own.
Academic Problem
In 150 words or more, use critical thinking and problem-solving tools to state the
solution you chose, explain which tools or resources helped you analyze the
problem and solution, and describe how this solution might solve the problem
effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words,
and any outside resources used should include a citation.
Problem: Choosing a major
Solutions:
Choose the major that gets a job with the highest salary
Choose the major that is most interesting
Choose the major that seems to be the easiest program
Response: Choosing a major can be a difficult academic choice. Out of the three
solutions listed I would go with the major that is most interesting. I believe that you
should have interest in what it is that you are choosing to study. Your major should
be able to capture your attention and be something that you would want to study.
Getting a job with a higher paying salary can be something good but if you’re not
interested in what you are doing or studying then you are bound to spend your life
in a job that is miserable because while it pays good its nothing that you actually
want to be doing. Doing something easy just to be able to pass, once again, can
result in a lack of not actually enjoying what it is that you will end up doing as a job.
You can also lose academically because something so easy can cause you not to
really give an effort or to pay enough attention to gain all the knowledge necessary
being provided to you. I used analyzing creative solution ideas and developing a
viable solution.

problem and solution, and describe how this solution might solve the problem
effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words,
and any outside resources used should include a citation.
Problem: Lack of training at work
Solutions:
Quit the job and find a new job that provides better employee training
Ask for a meeting with the team leader to discuss the need for more
training
Try and find training opportunities outside of work (take classes, sign
up for webinars, attend professional conferences)
Response: The workplace can be tricky. My solution would be to ask for a team
meeting with the team leader to discuss the need for more training. Quitting and
finding a new job that provides better employee training is not guaranteed. Jobs can
be tough to get and opportunities can be slim to none. There is no guarantee that
you will find a job to suit your needs. Trying to find outside solutions can also be
conflicting to your job. While yes you can be gaining additional knowledge it might
not necessarily pertain to what it is your job needs from you, as well as the way
your job prefers for you to operate and can cause conflict. Asking your trainer to
provide additional training will not only make sure you are getting the proper tools
for that particular job but also it can provide other employees better knowledge and
opportunities for more training as well. Training within the workplace can also offer
you a better chance of success within that current employment. I have chose to
evaluate the solutions and develop a viable solution.
Personal Problem
In 150 words or more, use critical thinking and problem-solving tools to state the
solution you chose, explain which tools or resources helped you analyze the
problem and solution, and describe how this solution might solve the problem
effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words,
and any outside resources used should include a citation.
Problem: A strained relationship with a family member due to an argument
Solutions:
Ask to have a conversation face to face to discuss the argument civilly
Text the family member to try and repair the relationship
Let the argument go, and try to move forward
Response: This is an are I am very familiar with. Unfortunately, my sister and I have
had this dramatic battle our whole lives because we are so very different. My
solution would be to ask to have a conversation face to face to discuss the
argument civilly even though its not the option I always choose. Knowing very well
the complications of the other options it is a very easy choice. Texting the family
member can definitely lead to more conflict. Misunderstanding can be a result of
this solution. We tend to hear the tone of a message we choose to hear. If someone

writes in all caps it tends to come off like a person is yelling. Also, the way you read
a message can decipher into something that is expressed as an attitude when it is
not. Letting the argument go will just lead to unresolved conflict. Just because you
don’t talk about it doesn’t mean that it just goes away. There will also be this
unspoken tension or uncomfortableness and the conflict will just linger.
