LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DIVINITY Submitted to Dr. Phillip Stevens in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of 202140 Fall 2021 THEO 109-B01 LUO Theology Survey III by Victor Haymon 10/04/2021
My friend Darrell accepted Christ as his savior this past weekend, it was one of the best weekends at church my family has had in a long time. Now that he is a Christian there are some principals, I must share with him for his new life in Christ to go on to maturity. The Bible says in Hebrews 6:1-2 KJV “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” My friend Darrel is like a brand-new baby in Christ, and he doesn’t know all he needs to know about following the Lord and being His disciple. Matthew Henry in His Commentary on the Bible says “ The Apostle mentions several foundation-principals which must be well laid at first, and then built upon, neither his time nor theirs must be spent in laying these foundations over and over again, the foundations are six:-- 1. Repentance from dead works that is, conversion and regeneration. 2. Faith towards God, a firm belief of the existence of God, of His nature, attributes, and perfection, the trinity of persons in the unity of essence, the whole mind and will of God as revealed in His word. 3. The doctrine of baptism, that is being baptized by a minister of Christ with water; in the name of the father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. 4. Laying on of hands, on persons passing solemnly from their initiated state by baptism to the state. 5. The resurrection of the dead, that is of dead bodies, and their re-union with their souls.
6. Eternal judgement, determining the soul of everyone, when it leaves the body at death. [1.] Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the whole Bible PPg. 1917. These are the essential principles and practices I would teach a new convert so that he can continue to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. After salvation I would suggest to this new convert to be baptized. In the New Testament church, the Lord has given us two ordinances, and they are Baptism and the Lord supper [2.], according to Dr. Fred Smith’s video presentation. In Wilmington’s guide to the Bible he states “In the New Testament, baptism is seen as a first-step, onetime ceremony. Since it is not a magical action that brings salvation or makes us closer to God, we would encourage you to not confuse yourself or others by being baptized more than once after salvation. There are no examples of people in the New Testament being baptized more than once. (Dr. Matthew Wilmington, Material prepared for headers of West Ridge Church, Hiram, GA). Certainly, baptism by immersion best pictures the significance of death to the old life and resurrection to the new life in Christ”. [3.] Wilmington’s guide to the Bible PPg. 647. Furthermore, I would also advise him to invite all his friends to witness his baptism ceremony, as Dr. Willmington say in his guide to the Bible, “That baptism serves as a sign of one’s salvation. This is the position of Baptists and others. Stated another way, baptism becomes a public, outward testimony giving evidence to a personal, inward faith. This view is totally supported by all nine events recorded in the book of Acts where

people were baptized. Without exception, immediately following their conversion they were baptized as a public testimony of their newfound faith”. [4.] Wilmington’s guide to the Bible PPg. 647. I truly believe it also shows all his old worldly friends his break with his old life and serves as a testimony to them as well, and a opportunity to hear the gospel. After baptism, I would help him find a church that teaches and preaches the word of God, because of the importance of the local church. With that thought in mind, the local church is vitally important to the spiritual growth and advancement of the kingdom of God. In the book of Acts after the Apostle preached and conviction fell on the people attending the service that day, people got saved, they were converted and joined the first church of Jerusalem. They were baptized and added to the congregation. In Acts 2:41, 47NASB So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand [ a ] souls. ”. praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to [ a ] their number day by day those who were being saved. Even though there is no direct scripture that says for Christian to join a New Testament Bible believing church, I do believe that Darrell should find a church to join, I’m going to invite him back to my church. Because I believe the church in Jerusalem Knew and counted all their new converts as members. Coupled with that, I also believe that daily Bible reading is important, at our church the pastor has a well thought out Bible reading plan that takes you through the Bible in one year. Daily Bible reading is important to Christian growth . In Psalm 119:11NIV I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. I learned very early in my Christian walk to read the Bible daily, to know what the Lord says about matters I faced every day. Also, in the Book of 2 Timothy 2:15 says “ Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker
who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” To be able to handle the truth I need to know the truth. I would advise my friend Darrell to start reading John’s gospel. Dr. Elmer Towns in his book says “The gospel of John seems to be the simplest of all books in the Bible to understand. That is why most new Christians are told to begin studying the Bible by reading the book of John. But at the same time, it is the most profound book in the Bible. [5.] The gospel of John believe and live PPg.xi introduction. In conclusion, I feel that my friend Darrell will be ok, He is saved now, and that salvation is according to Ephesians 4:30 KJV “ And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption”. Charles C. Ryrie in Basic Theology says “This refers to that future day when our redemption shall be fully accomplished, including receiving our resurrection bodies. Thus, the sealing guarantees the complete fulfillment of Gods promises to us. [5.] Basic Theology Charles C. Ryrie PPg. 415. My wife and I are going to commit to discipling him, encouraging him, praying for him, praying with him, as he starts this journey with Christ Jesus.
