Reflective Journal Template – Topic Reflection
Topic
Death with dignity
What are the key points of contention on this topic?
The main argument on this topic is that Dr. Mahal believes in the Death with Dignity Act and that it complies with ethical standards. While Dr. Mahal agrees with that law, Dr. Meadows does not. Dr. Meadows believes that physician-assisted-suicide violates the sanctity of human life and it is morally wrong. What side of the argument (stance) do you take on this topic?
My stance on this topic is with Dr. Mahal. I believe that we as human beings do have the right to end our own lives when faced with a painful, terminal disease. The choice of our own life should not be taken away. The PAS law obeys to ethical standards as it gives these patients their own choice. What strong points does the other side of this topic have?
One strong point that I agree with from the other side is that there is no requirement that doctors explain the ethical position of those who oppose PAS. I see Dr. Meadows’ view about how alternatives must be offered. What were the three most important things you took away from the topic?
1.
I saw the different sides to this argument. Although my stance was on one side, I still was able to see what the other side was saying.
2.
Physicians are not forced to participate in PAS if they are opposed to it which give them their own choice.
3.
The details and requirements of Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. Which ethical theory (of the 6 approved ones ONLY – Kant; Act Utilitarianism; Rule Utilitarianism; Care
Ethics; Virtue Ethics; and Social Contract) would you apply to this topic to defend your stance? Explain fully. 250 words.
A)
In this reflection you must first define the key terms of the debate (for example, define what Euthanasia/Abortion/Stem Cell/Public Health/PreNatal Testing/Animal Research/Health Care, etc. means and what are the different types depending on which topic you are discussing)
B)
Define and explain the ethical theory you chose (show me you know exactly what the theory is and does – in your own words)
C)
Present the evidence both pro and con and follow up how using your ethical theory is the best way
to determine whether or not your stance is really ethical
D)
Conclusion – any final thoughts and opinions would go here
E)
2 to 3 resources as support for your evidence (text book counts as 1)
A)
Euthanasia is defined as the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly
sick or injured individuals in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy (Merriam-
Webster, 2023). In other words, euthanasia is also known as assisted suicide. B)
The ethical theory that I would apply to the topic of euthanasia to defend my stance would be care ethics. The moral theory known as “the ethics of care” implies that there is moral significance in the fundamental elements of relationships and dependencies in human life (Wrenn, 2023). This theory revolves around the word care. It focuses on the importance of interpersonal connections, emotions, and our bodies. My simple explanation of this theory is caring for yourself and others in an ethical way. It is based on moral and the principles in life. It The main purpose of this theory is that it makes you emphasize on compassion and respect for others. C)
This debate on euthanasia focuses on being morally wrong or right. On one side you have
euthanasia being morally right because it is giving the patient their own choice and respecting their decision on wanting to end their unbearable pain. On the other side you have it being morally wrong because it goes against the sanctity of life. The doctrine of the sanctity of life has been characterised as a Judeo-Christian doctrine that has it that bodily human life is an intrinsic good and that it is always impermissible to kill an innocent human. Abortion and euthanasia are often assumed to violate the doctrine (Clarke, 2023). This theory works supports my stance on this topic really well. Since care
ethics emphasizes on the respect and compassion for others’ emotions and bodies, this shows how ethical my stance really is because euthanasia allows people to have dignity in choosing what to do with their own life. It is not morally right to force people in these circumstances to suffer in excruciating pain every day until their death.
