Given the information provided in this story please answer the questions below. 1.
Based on only the information provided above, what about this situation, if anything can we say Rick knows with 100% certainty? Explain or provide support for your answer. Rick looks forward to his Aunt Gayles sweet potato pie every year for Christmas. He Is certain that her pies are delicious and he looks forward to these pies every year at this time. However, I feel that Rick looks forward to traditions also. His Aunt Gayle has sent him these pies since he was 10 years old, he is now 33 years old and still admires this tradition that his grandma Gayle implemented when he was a child with her pies. 2.
It seems that Rick thinks his Aunt G's pie is in the package. Based on only the information provided, would you categorize Rick's thought as 'Absolute True Knowledge or Justified Belief'? And why? Can you give at least one other example of your own to show difference between how you view the distinction between knowledge v.s. belief?
Ricks thought is a Justified belief. The information provided does not say that the pie is certainly inside of the box. Even though Aunt Gayle given him the gift of her sweet potato pie on Christmas for 23 years, however, it is not confirmed about the items inside the box. There could be other items inside the box this year. An example of knowledge v.s. Belief; My daughter is a competitive cheerleader; she loves choreography and is usually the first to complete the whole dance portion of their routine without a mistake. On their last competition, she ended up falling doing her back flip Which resulted in point deductions. My daughter believed that she was going to perform without deductions as their team previously completed, however, the outcome shows that even though she believed this, it wasn't complete knowledge, meaning it was not True knowledge. This would require a validation of the belief. 3.
Application of theory:
Epistemologically speaking, what would Descartes or Plato have have to say in relation to this scenario and why? What would Locke say and why? (Note, Locke is in the start of the next module -I encourage you to take a look at the lecture prior to responding) You only need to apply one philosopher here for credit, but it must
be one of
the philosophers
that covered and I need you to show that you understand their idea by applying it to this scenario.
Descartes would relate with this scenario by his understanding that things need to be doubted when it comes to senses and perception. He would not immediately think the pie was inside the box or imply that it would be there. Seeing a box does not give enough indication of the pie, it is ok to be skeptical. If he would like to receive true knowledge, the evidence is inside the package.
By opening the package he has direct evidence, however, before opening the gift, he will rely on reason and rational thought to understand if the pie was in the box or not. 4.
We accept information all the time both with and without some level of certainty. For example, we accept that countries exist in the world (Chad and Brazil) even if we have never traveled to them. We accept that certain foods and products are safe for us without knowing exactly every ingredient inside, etc. We read a news story about a famous person or a tragic accident and accept the information. That being said, what are your personal criteria or requirements for something to considered true knowledge vs. belief? Based off that criteria you just set, what are at least 2 things you personally hold as absolute true knowledge? True Knowledge can only be determined by Facts, evidence, and able to be proven while a belief is typically an opinion or based off experiences/personal thoughts. When determining if something is true knowledge, it is a process of tests and observation to verify the evidence. Two things I hold as true knowledge is how the Earth revolves around the sun or the scientific theory of Plate Tectonics. Both examples are scientifically proven to scientifically work and function. 5.
Just for fun (no points): Is the pie in the package? (Also, add brief sentence or two on why you are answering yes or no here) I feel that the pie is in the package because every year for 23 years he received the sweet potato pie; he relates the pie he gets every year to the red packaging and blue bow. why would it not be in the package this year if this is a tradition.
