Guide Your Research.”
Question
Your Responses Here (use back if necessary)
1. Topic:
to what extent has the reported Chinese discriminatory engagement with Tibetan Buddhist monasteries since 2008 been justified for the purpose of maintaining Chinese national security.
2. Case Study (Short Statement of Actual Issue/Actors/Event Itself)
The religious repression in Tibet by the Chinese authorities can be clearly seen as evidenced by to Chinese governments treatment of locals and the monasteries and the governments infiltration into the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy.
This mainly deals with the Chinese government and how they handle the view of security with Tibet and the individuals and monks apart of the Tibetan Buddhism religion. From China’s side is specifically deals with the public security officials that are tasked to monitor these religions and the president Xi Jinping and how he handles these religions. Also, Zhu Weigum is
a Beijing based official that is known to be tightening control on religion. Although there were riots in 2008 linking monks to it this can be related to Chinese security, but since there have been no issues since they do not appear to be a security issues and the amount that their right to freely worship is being taken away is a big issue.
3. Political Issue (Longer
Question
That Your Project Will Answer – REMEMBER DEFINITION OF POLITICAL ISSUE)
To what extent has the repression of religion and the government involvement in religion around the world hurt the human rights of the citizens that participate in these religions?
4. Key Concepts That Will Be Embedded In Project and How They Will Be Utilized
(Avoid more than 3)
One key concept is power as there is a need to stop it showing a consequence for this infraction of religious rights instead of being an example of sitting back and letting it happen with not using a governments power to effect change.
Another concept is human rights and how there are basic claims and entitlements that many argue one should be able to exercise simply be being human which religion could fall under this category. Religion is apart of human rights and should be something everyone can freely take part in. Equality in that all groups are seen as having the same intrinsic value which must be seen that all groups and in this case religious groups should be seen as equal and all having value. No persecution should be seen towards these religions.
5. Theoretical Foundation(s) Through Which Issue Will Be Examined and How They Will Be Used
For theories, the human rights lenses of universalism is apparent with what we view as a universal right concerning religion. This relates closely back to the previous content of human rights with religion being a huge subject that is viewed as a common human right.
When dealing with this topic relativism is also apparent with as
the concept of how security is handled is all relative to each country. In china’s case they are more willing or at the least the government has the power too deal closely with the lives of the
people if they feel that there is a problem there or a past problem. 6. Prescribed Content From Formal IB Unit(s) That Will Be Embedded in Project and How It Will Be Embedded (center column of your IB Units)
The IB unit of human rights with what human rights truly means, the protection of it and the violations of it. It goes closely with religion in the fact that this is also a general human
right.
7. At which Level of Analysis Will Your Issue Be Examined? How Would It “Look” At One Other Level of Analysis?
This deals with how the Chinese leader deals with religion and the basic freedoms of people. Also in article 36 of the Chinese constitution states that citizens “enjoy freedom of religious belief” the treatment of Tibetan Buddhism shows otherwise. It impacts of the national level is controlled and how it trickles down to the local level where each individual is concerned with how they are allowed to worship. It truly questions how well the current actors are fit to govern as there is a clear lack of respect for some human rights.
It does not bode well for the local level socially as the individual citizens are not having their rights respected. The actors may not reflect well with the general population as they do not have the same respect they deserve as humans.
8. Identify the Different Perspectives Through Which Your Issue Will Be Examined and How They Will Relate To Each Other
The religious repression in Tibet by the Chinese authorities can be clearly seen as evidenced by to Chinese governments treatment of locals and the monasteries and the governments infiltration into the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy. The Chinese government plays a large factor in not allowing the Tibetan Buddhist to freely worship and have full religious rights as they continue to attempt to control the religion and set rules to keep these worshippers always following the Chinese guidelines and government. Although there were riots in 2008 linking monks to it this can be related to Chinese security, but since there have been no issues since they do not appear to be a security issues and the amount that their right to freely worship is being taken away is a big issue.
9. What Is Your EVIDENCE That This Is Not An Isolated
Case, But A Manifestation of
A Much Broader Global Political Challenge That Plays Out In Many Places? (Where else is it happening? How is it playing out there?)
The Chinese government is directing a crushing campaign of religious repression against China’s Muslim Uighurs. It is said that China has local regulations, official newspaper accounts, and interviews conducted in Xinjiang. It unveils for the first time the complex architecture of law, regulation, and policy in Xinjiang that
denies Uighurs religious freedom, and by extension freedom of association, assembly, and expression. Chinese policy and law enforcement stifle religious activity and thought even in school and
at home. One official document goes so far as to say that “parents and legal guardians may not allow minors to participate in religious
activities.”
At a more mundane level, Uighurs face harassment in their daily lives. Celebrating religious holidays, studying religious texts, or showing one’s religion through personal appearance are strictly forbidden at state institutions, including schools.
For Christians in Indonesia Despite religious rights granted by the constitution, there has been an growing trend of Christian discrimination, taking various forms including hate speech and violence. One particularly relevant example of this discrimination recently has been the denial of building permits for houses of
worship.
Violent attacks on Christians are commonly led by radical
Islamic groups. On November 27, 2020, a horrific attack occurred at small Christian village on the island of Sulawesi, one of 6,000 inhabited islands in Indonesia.
Which aspects of the topic overview (pgs. 3~8) make you confident that your selected case study is a strong example of the topic area?
Security is the main link as the issue all begins with the want for security in china, but also for the security of a fair lifestyle. Human rights violations can be viewed as attacks on individuals’ fundamental sense of security.
Identity can be seen with religion as it is a large part of their identity and closely related with human rights. Using pgs. 9~14, which Inquiries, People to Know, and Potential Sources will be valuable for your case study? Be sure to include the focus area and record them here. (ex. Cooperation
& Gov’t, Human Rights, Development, Conflict, and/or Environment.
Please read carefully through ALL, there is fascinating overlap between Gov’t, Human Rights, Development, Conflict, and Environment, and skipping sections could result in your missing incredible questions to guide your inquiry/research, excellent thinkers, and crucial sources

Since 1950 the newly established Chinese communist regime gained control over Tibet possessing them ever since, but with this new rule full religious rights in Tibet have not been seen throughout this long period of time. Tibet has not been able to maintain the basic rights of religion with the Chinese government carefully watching every move and even stepping in to adjust the worshipping of Tibetan Buddhism. There has been a violent past within Tibet concerning the Monks and the Chinese with riots occurring in 2008 yet it is calm now with the Chinese still stepping

in to make regulations. Although this is a Tibetan based religion the Chinese government has gone so far as to say with some cases the Chinese government have the final say over the monks that are appointed the most senior Tibetan Monks. The Chinese
government continued as they revised the religious regulations showing their view of equating religion to extremism.
Which points and perspectives do you want to communicate?
The religious repression in Tibet by the Chinese authorities can be clearly seen as evidenced by to Chinese governments treatment of locals and the monasteries and the governments infiltration into the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy. The Chinese government plays a large factor in not allowing the Tibetan Buddhist to freely worship and have full religious rights as they continue to attempt to control the religion and set rules to keep these worshippers always following the Chinese guidelines and government. There were riots in 2008 linking monks to it this can be related to Chinese security given them justification to a certain extent, but then posing the question at what point does maintaining security compromise the citizens human rights.
How will you conclude?
The repression of the Tibetan Buddhists is clear no matter the label that is put on it with security. The much change with the general respect of human rights for the Tibetans needing to be at the forefront of the Chinese government’s responsibility. At this point there is a clear issue in the world with religious persecution and none of these cases can be overlooked. They all should be addressed and focused on to make sure that every
person in this world has the same sacred rights as a human.
This deals with the topic area of security as this is what the Chinese government has been using as a reason for repression of Tibetan Buddhists and the security of a free life and free religion is sacred with human rights. This case study is about the religious repression in Tibet by the Chinese authorities can be clearly seen as evidenced by to Chinese governments treatment of locals and the monasteries and the governments infiltration into the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy. This mainly deals with the Chinese government and how they handle the view of security with Tibet and the individuals and monks apart of the Tibetan Buddhism religion. This main issue raised is with the lack of respect by the government towards the citizens ability to take part in their religion. The two perspectives are from the Tibetan Buddhists side with watching the Chinese government play a large factor in not allowing the Tibetan Buddhist to freely worship and have full religious rights as they continue to attempt to control the religion and set rules to keep these worshippers always following the Chinese guidelines and government. The other perspective comes from the Chinese government with security as in 2008 they had issues with riots from monks that were linked to this religion. To watch out for this threat again means keeping a close eye on this religion as a whole. This case is by far not the only example of current religious repression. There are many of these situations all over the world and this issue must be addressed and solved. Politics always play a part in why the repression is occurring and how it can be fixed and this problem must be worked on just as it should in every case around the
world.

I will be confronting the repression of Tibetan Buddhists in by the Chinese government Using the political challenge of security and the concepts of power and human rights.

Why it matters- Human Rights
Basic claims and entitlements that, many argue, one should be able to exercise simply by virtue of being a human being.
universalism conventionally refers to the idea that the range of human experience – from basic needs and psychological processes to core values – is intrinsic and therefore similar across humans and cultures.
Relativism the doctrine that knowledge, truth, and morality exist in relation to culture, society, or historical context, and are not absolute.

There are no clear economic impacts. The only few could be that the government was putting more money into monitoring these religious groups when they could be used in other places.
